On the 21st of July 2018, Clare McCracken boarded the ANL Wahroonga container ship to travel to China mirroring her great-great-grandmother's journey from Australia to Asia in 1874. Artist statement from the back of the flyer: "In 1874, my great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Amy Cathcart Payne, sailed unaccompanied from Australia to Asia, writing a detailed journal of her experiences. This exhibition weaves together sections of her diary with my own voyage from Australia to the world's busiest port, Shanghai. In doing so, The Place Between, is a meditation upon the social and political nature of international trade, the mobility and the place between Australia and the rest of the world in the 19th and 21st century." Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. Deborah KLEIN (1951- ) Born Melbourne Deborah Klein is an established Australian painter and printmaker who completed a Bachelor of Fine Art, Printmaking, Chisholm Institute of Technology, Melbourne from 1982-1984. She undertook a Graduate Diploma from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education from 1987 to 1988, and a Master of Arts, (Research), at Monash University, Gippsland Campus from 1995-1997. Klein often explores how women have been forgotten or erased in art and history. Imagery of braided hair and materials related to the stereotypically ‘female’ spheres of handcrafts and weaving are often features of her work. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Clothing. Single knife pleat on either side of front waistband, 20 cms deep fly front, with plastic zip, and metal fastener on waistband. Also evidence of an internal front tab fastening with cotton stitched button hole, but button is missing. Two side pockets sewn into side seams, and two bound pockets on either side of back -all polyester or nylon fabric. Seven 1 cm belt loops around waistband. A 3 cm wide strip of red flannel is stitched from waistband to hem on the outer side of each leg. Functional object - Bookmark, Thomas Stevens, Coventry and London, Mizpah, late 19th century
This bookmark was found loose inside one of our antiquarian books and no connection to the book or its unknown original owner have been found. The word Mizpah means Watchtower in Hebrew and a Mizpah card or bookmark was sent or given to Jewish people who were separated from their loved ones, with the message that the Lord was watching over those absent. The bookmark has been made by the firm of Thomas Stevens of Coventry. This city was the English centre of ribbon weaving in the 19th century and Thomas Stevens, a local weaver, invented and developed in the 1860s the art of making woven silk items - book marks, greeting cards, art works etc. These were called Stevengraphs. Stevens opened a factory in London in 1878 and by the 1880s was producing over 900 woven silk designs. Stevengraphs are a collectors' Items today and this Mizpah bookmark is a fine example of one.This is a woven silk bookmark with multi-coloured patterns. coloured script and a sprig of flowers, probably fuchsias, all on a yellow background. There is a red tassel at the end of the bookmark. The bookmark was affixed to a rectangular sheet of paper containing details of the maker but the bookmark is now detached. Modern industrialized Berber carpets are distinguished by a loop pile construction type that gives a similar appearance to the distinct knot of traditionally woven Berber carpets. The modern carpets usually contain small flecks of dark colour on lighter shades of background colours resembling a natural undyed version of the traditional carpets. Berber is known for being one of the oldest and most durable kinds of carpet. Traditionally, Berber carpets are carpets hand-woven by the Berber people in North Africa and the Sahara. The carpets come in traditional and modern designs, which are distinguished by different knotting patterns, dyes and fabric textures. The origin of carpet weaving by the Berber populations dates back several millennia. The hand-spun cloth they created was named after the individual tribe, and they used natural fibres to create cloaks, rugs and other fabrics. ... Weaving ...The loom was made by John Charles Mann in the late 1920s-early 1930s for Lilian Joyce Mann. Mr Mann enjoyed woodwork. He died in 1945. Ms Mann was very interested in crafts and owned a shop in Jacob Street which sold handmade soft toys and items woven from the loom, for example table mats. The shop was later bought out by Henry Jacobs and later became Myer. Ms Mann died on the 17th July 2007. Ludwig HIRSCHFELD-MACK (1893-1965) Born 11 July 1893, Frankfurt am Main, Germany In 1940 Hirschfeld-Mack was deported to Australia from England as an enemy alien in the Dunera. He was interned at Hay and Orange, New South Wales, and at Tatura, Victoria. There he made a number of woodcuts that illustrated life under detention. Released in 1942 through the sponsorship of (Sir) James Darling, headmaster of Geelong Church of England Grammar School, Hirschfeld-Mack was appointed its art master. He promoted his pupils' self-knowledge, introduced them to avant-garde painting techniques, and encouraged wood-carving, weaving, musical instrument-making, leatherwork and other crafts.
