Card - Image, Concert party of blind musicians, 1896-1900
Five men in suits with high collars and bow ties pose with three ladies in evening dress. To the far left are Aaron Solomon and Annie Rose Drummond, and to the far right is John Irwin. Aaron Solomon (1870-1936) was enrolled at the RVIB school in 1878, after losing his sight at 6 years of age. He first began participating in concerts in September 1884, at an exhibition of talent that was held by the Institute and the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute, to raise awareness of their work and achievements. He then became a regular performer with the entertainment troupe and travelled around Victoria singing and playing piano, even after his discharge from the Institute in 1892. In 1894 he formed his own troop of players and toured around Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand. This consisted of two females (Tilly Aston and Maggie Mulvogue) and three males (Charles Bartlett, John Irwin and himself). In 1896, Annie Drummond, Nellie Andrew and William Snell replaced the Aston, Mulvogue and Bartlett, and W.W. Spicer was appointed as manager with his wife acting as an assistant to the ladies of the group. In 1897-1898, H Forder replaced William Snell. On a return tour to New Zealand in late 1898, Thomas Andrews - brother to Nellie - joined the troop and Fred Hunter replaced H Forder. This was the first time the troop numbered eight people, who were also present when Annie Drummond married Aaron Solomon in Hamilton, New Zealand on Feb 3, 1899. This image could have been taken in 1898 before they left as a promotional card, or in 1899 when they returned, as a memento of the happy occasion.1 cardboard postcard size image with silver writingA. Geoffrey Kaye Museum of Anaesthetic History
Container - Phial, Ethyl Chloride, Bengue & Co. Ltd. Mfg. Chemists, Circa 1900
The glass phial contained liquid ethyl chloride, little pressure being required to liquefy the gas at room temperature. By directing the nozzle downwards at the skin or mucous membrane to be analgesed, a stream of liquid squirts out, vaporising on contact, thus producing transient local temperatures of approximately -10 qc. Ether's unpleasant smell agitated patients. Ethyl chloride's pleasant odour reduced agitation. It could be used for induction and worked quickly without irritating respiratory passages. Ethyl chloride spray could also be used as a local anaesthetic. Faded rectangular burgundy box containing a glass phial with metal and rubber lid that forms a spray nozzle. The lid of the box had a mustard coloured manufacturer's label wtih burgundy writing. The phial has a discoloured white label with red writing and a blue label with white writing.Printed in white ink on blue label: IMPORTANT / NOT DESTROY THIS TUBE, IT CAN / BE REFILLED FOR / 2/10bengue & co. ltd., london, ethyl chloride, 1900, local anaesthesia -

City of Kingston
Photograph - Colour, 29 January 1993
Bonbeach is a small beachside suburb located between Chelsea and Carrum. The station was opened in 1926 and was the last to be established in the group from Aspendale to Carrum. Urban growth began after World War II. State primary and high schools were opened in 1958 on land in Breeze Street that was once occupied by The Australian Glass Manufacturers. Immediately east of the school sites is the Patterson River Golf Club. The Bonbeach sports reserve has five ovals and is home to the Bonbeach football and baseball clubs. The suburb borders the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands which is the remnant site of the Carrum Carrum swamp, once the home of the Bunurong people.Bonbeach was originally a seaside destination for holidaymakers and the housing comprised of holiday homes and gradually more permanent residents. It was not until 1926 that Bonbeach had its own railway station. From 1906 until the late 1940s sand was quarried on the east side of the railway line and used in the manufacture of glass. The Australian Glass Manufacturers sold this land in residential blocks and Bonbeach's permanent population spread from the coastal strip across to the other side of the railway line. Laminated colour aerial photograph of the suburb of Bonbeach and also the southern section of neighbouring Chelsea within the City of Kingston. The extent of this 1993 aerial image includes: Top left - Maury Road at the south end of the Chelsea shopping Centre; Top right - Scotch Parade Chelsea Bottom left - Monica Avenue in Bonbeach; Bottom right - Patterson River Golf Club. Landmarks include St Joseph's Church and Primary School, Chelsea Primary School, Bonbeach Station, Bonbeach Fotball Club sports playing fields and Bonbeach Life Saving Club. The Edithvale Wetlands is featured prominently to the right-hand side of the image. ginger jar, Pre 1893 floods in Orbost
In the early days of Orbost many Chinese were engaged in land clearing or had arrived when gold was discovered in East Gippsland in the 1840's. They lived in camps along the Marlo Road and houses were usually built on stilts. They left after the 1893 floods. This object has aesthetic appeal. It is an object which belonged to the very early settlement days of Orbost.Huge, ornate Chinese ginger jar. Four raised hand- painted pink roses on front. Jar itself is matt black.
