1914-1918 Memorial Plaque In early 1920 it was announced that the next-of-kin of all Australian servicemen and women whose deaths were attributable to the First World War would receive a memorial plaque and scroll "as a solace for bereavement and as a memento". The memorial plaques were not uniquely Australian. In fact they were designed and produced in Britain and issued to commemorate all those who died as a result of war service from within the British Commonwealth. The idea for the plaques was originally conceived mid-way through the war. In 1917 a competition was announced to obtain a suitable design and 800 entries were eventually received. The winner, Mr. E. Carter Preston of Liverpool, England, was chosen in 1918. He was awarded a prize of 250 pounds. Mr Manning Pike directed the manufacture of the memorial plaques at the Memorial Plaque Factory set up at Acton, London. Some later plaques were also made at the Woolwich Arsenal. The cost of manufacturing so many plaques must have been considerable. Each plaque had the name of the soldier commemorated individually embossed (some were engraved) as part of the design. The full name was given without any indication of rank or honours to show the equality of sacrifice of all those who had lost their lives. The scroll designed to accompany the plaques was of thick paper, headed by the royal coat-of-arms, and bore the following message: "He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those that come after see that his name is not forgotten". Underneath the message the serviceman or woman’s name, rank, honours and unit were written by hand in red ink. Because of the late arrival in Australia of the plaques many scrolls were sent out separately. A message from the King, "I join with my grateful people in sending you this memorial of a brave life given for others in the Great War", was included with the scroll. The first plaques were distributed in Australia in 1922. Each plaque was sent out from Base Records Office at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne by second-class mail. Approximately 60,000 plaques were issued in Australia. Families of deceased members of the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Army Nursing Service also received plaques and scrolls First World War Memorial Plaque, bronze, in recognition of Private Sydney Frederick TURNER, from C Company, 9 Battalion who was KIA at Pozieres on 25 July, 1916. it is housed in a wooden surround with pattern embossed in the margins with a liking of the rising sun at the top. He is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial and is listed with an Australian Red Cross Society Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau File, a copy of which is attached.Embossed around the edge of the plaque "HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOVR". A military dark green painted steel container which is empty. This was a sealed container with rations for RAAF aircrew undertaking long duration flights. Khaki painted metal tin which contains rations, for use in aircraft. Printed in black on top of the detachable metal cover, which would have been taped down on top of the ring-pull lid, is; 'D^D / Made in Australia / Packed by MacROBERTSON'S / SPECIAL FLYING RATION / To be consumed by Air Crew carrying / out flights of 4 hour duration or longer. / List of contents on inside of lid / KEEP PACK INTACT / R.A.A.F / A Gadsden Container'. Printed on the top of the ring-pull lid is 'D^D D^D Contents believed to be (obtained from similar "Special Flying Ration") / Nuts. (Shelled) 4 ozs / Barley Sugar 3 ozs / Raisins 4 ozs / Chocolate ozs / Chewing Gum 3 pkts / Fruit Juice 8 ozs'.

Spare parts kit for the Lamps Signalling Daylight used by the Australian defence forces during World War 2. A small dark green painted metal container with a hinging lid which contains parts and instructions, including three spare lamp bulbs. Within the container there is a smaller tinplate container with a lid which has electrical contacts and connectors. Refer item 00417The container lid has the following inscription: "LAMPS SIGNALLING DAYLIGHT BOX SPARE PARTS MKII" and "PMG 1942"

The recipient of this medal is believed to be VX44669 Private James Robert Clancy of Thougla Upper which was in the Shire of Upper Murray. Private Clancy was born in Sandy Creek on 30 August 1903 enlisted in the Army on 8 July 1940 and was discharged on 8 March 1943. He served in the Signals Section of the 2nd Australian Anti-Aircraft Regiment.Municipalities in Australia recognised their residents who enlisted in World Wars by the issue of some form of recognition. This is a nice example of a medallic form of such recognition.A collection of items presented by the family of WWll Australian Army serviceman James Robert Clancy VX44669. Clancy was a signalman in the 2/2 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. Refer to items 00456.1, 00456.2, 00456.3 and 00456.4.

Circular with a plain edge and integral suspension loop. The obverse features a symbolic female figure of Peace, holding a sword and standing on a plinth marked 'PEACE 1919'. Behind her flies a dove, and at her left and right feet are two figures freed from their shackles. The reverse features a central panel surrounded by laurel leaves, surmounted by the King's Crown with the word 'VICTORY' over the rays of the rising sun. A sailor and a digger stand at ease on either side of the panel on which is cast 'THE / TRIUMPH / OF / LIBERTY / AND / JUSTICE'. Below the leaves is a very small panel with the words 'THE PEACE OF 1919' and the manufacturer's name. 'The Peace of 1919' medallion was issued by the Defence Department to school children throughout Australia to commemorate the signing of the Versailles Peace Treaty in 1919. The medals were originally suspended from a narrow piece of red, white and blue striped cotton ribbon.refer to description

Framed certificate in honour of Australian Army World War 1 serviceman Private Frederick Alfred Evans, service number 4803 of the 60th Battalion Australian Imperial Force. Evans had enlisted at Carlton, Melbourne, on the 20th July, 1915 and embarked from Melbourne for overseas service with the 5th Battalion on 7th March, 1916. Evans was later killed in action in France on the 19th July, 1916. This is an example of the certificate presented by the City of Fitzroy to local servicemen who had enlisted. The certificate is dated 15 April, 1918, and in this case, the certificate was presented to the deceased serviceman's family. The elaborate certificate is printed, in colour, on a quality card type paper and has a number 375 printed at the bottom left hand corner. The certificate is complete with the original cardboard tube in which it was stored.The certificate has the inscription: W. and J. Barr, Print., 105-7 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy

A small pocket book used as a diary by Australian Army World War 2 serviceman Private George Edward (Red) Miller, service number VX3693 of the 5th Battalion, 2nd Australian Imperial Force. The diary contains notes relating to Miller's service with the Australian Army in Palestine, Egypt, Libya and Greece. The pocket book has a folding cover and is covered in a buff coloured linen. (refer to items 00460 and 00460.2)

A leave pass issued to Australian Army World War 2 serviceman Private George Edward (Red) Miller, service number VX3693 of the 5th Battalion, 2nd Australian Imperial Force. The pass was issued on the 28th July, 1940 entitling Miller to take leave from 0650 hours to 1700 with permission for him to proceed to Jerusalem. The pass is printed on paper and has been completed with hand written details and comments. (refer to items 00460 and 00460.1)

Printed certificate awarded by the Education Department, Victoria to schoolchildren who raised the amount of one pound (the currency of that time) for the War Relief effort during World War 2. This example bears the name of Eva Littlechild, a pupil at Cheltenham School number 84 and is dated 22nd December, 1942. The certificate is signed by A E Lind, Minister of Education, J A Seitz, Director of the Education Department and H G Bretherton, Headmaster of the school. This ornate certificate is printed in colour on a medium quality card with handwritten awardee details.refer image

Plain white china feeding cup, provided with a handle and pouring spout at right angles to each other. There is a scalloped half-cover over the cup to prevent spillage. A Red Cross symbol, surrounded by a solid red circle, is located on the top. Used in hospitals for feeding invalid or bed-ridden patients.This cup has a Red Cross symbol on the upper surface. The underside of the cup has the following imprint: "MADE IN ENGLAND", "EMPIRE WORKS", "STOKE on TRENT" beneath a symbol of a crown which is beneath "E. P. Co.". The cup is also is impressed with the word "ENGLAND".

Small, packaged First Field Dressing issued to Australian and British service personnel during World War 1. The package is made of a tough, protective (waterproof?) fabric and comes complete with a safety pin for use as a bandage. These were carried by soldiers and used for initial treatment of wounds. This item has a printed label with instructions for use and was packaged by John Tye & Son, London in May (?) 1917.There is a label affixed to this item with the following inscription printed in black: "War Office", "Medical Division", "First Field Dressing", "JOHN TYE & SON, London, May (?) 1917"world war 1, ww1, dressing

A pair of serviceman's personal identification tags, Vietnam era, issued to (Private) H (Herman) E (Emil) ERBACHER, who was born in Germany, 12/2/1948 and served with the 4RAR from 12/5/1968 to 30/5/1969. These tags are attached to a jungle green coloured nylon cord, 2mm diameter. Standard WW2 era Australian Army issue, pattern 1937 equipment pack made of heavy weight cotton webbing material in the standard khaki colour. This pack was carried on the wearer's back, supported by two straps worn over the shoulder. These packs were used by military personnel to carry personal equipment items whilst in the field. This pack type is square in shape and has additional straps for attaching to webbing. The front of the pack has 'NX 83432 G Siddaway' written in black. The top flap of the pack is secured by two straps which attach to brass buckles secured by canvas loops to the front of the pack.This pack is stamped with the standard Australian Dept of Defence mark and has the serviceman's name "NX 83432 G. Sidaway"

An example of the Liberation Medal, fifth class, issued by the government of Kuwait for service during the Liberation of Kuwait campaign in the Gulf War of 1990 to 1993. This medal was provided to eligible Australian service personnel however is not worn as an official service decoration. This medal is engraved with the following; Hillier D. N. service number 322256. These are made of Bronze with coloured enamel features and have a ribbon with red, white and green vertical stripes. The medal complete with a service ribbon, is in a plastic presentation case which is stored in a protective cardboard sleeve.

A trophy in the form of a small replica of an Australian Army 'slouch hat' mounted on a circular stand. The 'slouch hat' is silver plated, has a turned brim on the left hand side and has a 'rising sun' hat badge. The circular stand is made of a light gauge steel which has been pressed in the form of an inverted dish and is coloured with a mid brown finish. There is a silver plated label attached to the dish which has been engraved indicating that this item was originally a trophy (origin unknown). The label has the following engraved inscription "R.
