Embarked for England 25/9/1916, embarked for France 4/2/1917, WIA 26/4/1918. GSW to left eye, severe. Left eye excised England 30/4/1918. RTA 23/9/1918. Discharged from the AIF 4/1/1919. Passed away 30/12/1925. John received a Congratulatory card from MAJ.General J.H. Hobbs, K.C.B, V.D. Commanding 5th Aust. Division - for bravery and devotion to duty in dressing and carrying wounded to the Regt. Aid Post during a counter attack on Villers Brettoneux on the night of 24/25th April 1918.Brass map of Australia fashioned into a bracelet. Band is secured with a clip. This board shows there are 7 Battle Honours which includes South Africa 1898 - 1902. This is due to Lineage pre the formation of the 38th BN in June 1916 in Bendigo. Refer Cat No 4435 for the actual 38th Bn Colours. This item is on display in the rear foyer entrance of the Bendigo District RSL in Havilah Road. The card was sent by James Henry Wicks to his sister, unknown. After serving in the 7th Batt, J H Wicks transfered to the 5th Machine Gun Batt AIF in France. He returned home in 1919Greeting card.The outer card is a parchment type paper fawn in colour. The front cover has a yellow ribbon band rectangular in shape glued to the card. A rectangular card is glued over this. The card contains flowers, an image of a church or mosque in a half circle. Above this to the right is wording. The first successful stripper harvestor ,a Nicholson & Morrow harvestor invented by James Morrow appeared at the Victorian Government trial at Dookie Experimental farm on Dec 27th 1883. Although the stripper harvestor was being manufactured in small numbers by the mid 1800's it did not take over from the tripper until 1904. Hugh McKay soon became the most successful manufacturer of stripper harvestors under the "Sunshine " name and by 1940 over 40,000 harvestors had been produced.This 1916 H.V. This reference is part of the Lawless Collection. The Lawless family lived in Orbost from 1907 - c 1920. John Francis Lawless had a saddlery shop. He died at an early age - 47 years - June 7 1912, leaving his wife, Elizabeth and seven children. The eldest son, Victor Rowland lawless volunteered for serv ice in WW1 but did not leave Australia because of illness. The second son, Edward Vincent Lawless (b 1895 d 1917) worked for McCoy & Co. in Orbost, coachbuilding, undertakers, general blacksmiths and farriers, prior to enlisting in WW1. He was trained as a signaller and was sent to France where he was killed in action on 9.10.1917. Elizabeth Lawless worked as a ladies' nurse (midwife) in Orbost prior to leaving the district in 1920. She lived to 6.6.1975 aged 104 years.These personal documents, photographs and books give an insight into the human element of World War 1 ensuring that those who were part of the Orbost community and died while playing a vital role during this time are remembered.A photocopy of a reference given to Edward Lawless when he enlisted for service in WW1.It is signed by J.Y.
