Melbourne Legacy
Poster, Legacy - they cared then, and they care now. Clive James (Former Junior Legatee), 1993
This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Clive James was Personality of the Year in 1993, which was the 70th anniversary of Legacy. The logo said "Seventy years of constant caring 1923-1993". Clive had been a junior legatee as a boy. This A4 page could be used as a poster to promote badge week. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). Was in a folder with marketing material from the 1990s to 2009, see items 01240 to 01258. The collection shows the types of marketing materials that were produced and the celebrities that were helping Legacy. An example of promotional material from the 1990s. Photograph, Three fine Junior Legatees now of the Victoria Police, 1976
Photograph of three Junior Legatees that have joined the Victorian police force. "Penny" (left), Andrew and Sally Graham were once junior legatees after the death of their father. With Legacy's support they all went on the join the police force. Presumably the photo was used to promote the successful work of Legacy. It was published in the 1976 Annual Report where the caption is unclear if they are all siblings or if "Penny" was a deidentified name but she was a Junior Legatee. 1976 Annual Report caption said: Three fine Junior Legatees, "Penny" (left), Andrew and Sally Graham, of the Victoria Police, and their widowed mother. are grateful for the assistance Melbourne Legacy has given them over the years.A record of Junior Legatees growing into respected adults.Black and white photo of three former Junior Legatees in police uniform.Hand written in blue ink "3 Junior Legatees of one family / Penny, Andrew and Sally Graham / Melbourne / Victoria Police" Stamped "The property of Melbourne Legacy / 9 Jul 1976" in purple ink. Photograph, Hayley Millar-Baker, Even if the race is fated to disappear 2 (Peeneeyt Meerreeng / Before, Now, Tomorrow), 2017
Land is mother, we live with the land – not off the land. This artwork comes from Millar-Baker’s Toongkateeyt (Tomorrow) series, which sees the mashing of Countries to create imagined landscapes that embody both birth country (Wathaurong) and ancestral country (Gunditjmara). Toongkateeyt takes an introspective exploration of contemporary Indigenous connection to land and identity post-colonisation. Using images she took herself and those taken by her grandfather, Millar-Baker focuses on places that have played an important part in her family’s intergenerational experiences. Each work in this series is built from hundreds of individual layers and photographs. Each rock, tree, animal etc. was photographed individually and cut out to create a new landscape depicting the ‘mashing’ of ‘countries’ and a personalised experience existing today as an Aboriginal person. photograph -

Painting, Mia Boe, 'Thank you for your acknowledgement, can we have our land back now', 2025
“Although acknowledgements of country are very necessary, there is something so painful about hearing people in power acknowledge Aboriginal country whilst at the same time doing nothing to support Aboriginal people or land in meaningful ways. The amount of CEOS, politicians, and people in power who acknowledge country whilst actively benefitting from Aboriginal Land is sickening. Words can only do so much. What we really want is our land back.” – Mia Boe Artist Bio Mia Boe is a painter from Brisbane with Butchulla and Burmese ancestry. The inheritance and disinheritance of both cultures is the focus of her practice. Boe’s paintings respond, sometimes obliquely, to historical and contemporary acts of violence perpetrated on the people and lands of Burma and Australia. Boe received a Bachelor of Art, majoring in Art History from the University of Queensland in 2020. In 2021, she was a recipient of the Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship from the Art Gallery of New South Wales and in 2024 she was the Fiona Foley Residency recipient, where she undertook a residency on K’gari and Hervey Bay in Queensland. She was a Gertrude Contemporary Studio Artist between 2022 and 2024, and has undertaken further residencies in Mexico City and Sydney. -
