This tunic was worn by Sir David Fairbairn KBE DFC when Honorary Colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1981-83. Sir David served with 21st Light Horse prior to World War Two. During WWII he served with the Royal Australian Air Force flying Spitfires in Britain and Europe and later in the war, in the Pacific theatre. Following the war, he entered politics, holding the federal seat of Farrer from 1949-1975. He was Minister for Defence 1971-73. Sir David was Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands 1977-1980.This object is well provenanced, complete and representative uniform worn by an honorary colonel of the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment, a man who gave exemplary service as a serviceman, politician and diplomat.Service dress tunic, polyester summer, with yellow cord lanyard, officer badges of rank, 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles collar badges, silver Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) buttons, and pilot qualification badge (wings). Alfred Maskell No VX25221 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 25.6.40 aged 19 years. Posted to 4th Anti Tank Regt with the rank of Gunner he was taken POW at the fall of Singapore. He was held in Changi Gaol then went to work on the Thai-Burma Railway 1942-43 followed by Prison ship to Japan where he worked on the Docks until Wars end. Wood was an RAAF Fitter/Armourer with overseas service. he served for 4 years and 3 months and was demobilised on 3 December 1945 This is the standard set of medals for a member of the Defence Forces in WWII with service in the islands to our north.Set of five service medals, with miniatures, in wooden cigar box, with leaflet on medal entitlements and Interim Discharge Certificate for 42333 Sgt S. Wood, RAAF. Consists of 1939-1945 Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal War Medal 1939-45, Australian Service Medal 1939-45. Stars are inscribed 42333 S.T.Wood on rear. The medals have the same inscription on the lower outside rim. Box has "S.T.Wood" and some other illegible characters scratched into wood on upper outside surface.
