In 1860 the Wurundjeri Elder, Wonga, petitioned the Victorian Parliament for a piece of land in his people’s own country where he could establish a settlement. The land later named Coranderrk was granted. When Wonga died in 1875 his nephew William Barak, known by settlers as ‘King William, last chief of the Yarra Yarra tribe’, became the leader, the Ngurungaeta. William Barak believed strongly in justice for his people, and time and again made the arduous walk to Melbourne to petition to Parliament and to Queen Victoria for his people. ‘Freedom for our lifetime’, he said. The community at Coranderrk welcomed Aboriginal people displaced from other parts of Victoria; they established an economically self-sufficient settlement by growing and marketing hops. Barak negotiated with the Victorian Government officials as they made promises and broke promises. They finally promised to export the whole of a hop harvest of one year. The people worked around the clock to fill the contract; the Government pocketed the proceeds. The community never recovered. Barak died in 1903— a broken-hearted man. (from http://www.sosj.org.au/_uploads/_cknw/files/Corenderrk.pdf) Artist William Barak is buried in this cemetery.Photographs of graves in grass and bushland. Photograph - AUTOMAP 2 Production - Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986
This collection of 23 photos of map production on the AUTOMAP 2 computer-based system in Air Survey and Cartographic Squadrons, was most likely taken in 1986. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system, comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (Wild B8 Aviograph feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. Throughout its life, the system was progressively refined with productivity gains, achieved from award winning technical development in-house by talented and innovative Army Survey Regiment personnel. This is a set of 23 photograph of AUTOMAP 2 production at the Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986. Certificate, Bendigo Easter Fair Charity Carnival, 1939
The first Bendigo Easter Fair was held on April 10th and 11th 1871 and remains one of Australia’s longest running annual community events. Its purpose was to raise funds in aid of two local charities; The Bendigo Hospital, and The Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. In the first year the event raised 2,560 pounds which was split between the two charities, each receiving f 1,280. A fundraising event called the Popular Girl was held from 1930 to 1996 in which well-known local young ladies raised money for charity. The woman who raised the largest amount of money was crowned as Miss Popular Girl. The competition is no longer held. The 2010 parade contained a section in which a number of past Popular Girls paraded once again. The Popular Girl contest was preceded by the Queens' competition from about 1916 to 1929. The winner was selected by receiving the most votes which translated to funds raised for their respective charities. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bendigo_Easter_Festival Lorna Dorothy Stevens (Jamieson) born in Eaglehawk in 1910 d 2000 in South Australia, daughter of William Eccles Jamieson and Emma Jane Jamieson.Printed certificate featuring gold on cream coloured paper.
