Letter - Re Request For Extension Of Time To Clear Site 3, 23.01.1962
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This letter is significant because it reflects the relationship between Bob Hymans and the Management Committee.A letter dated 23rd January 1962 from the Management Committee declining Bob Hymans' request for an extension to the timeline to clear Site 3, the location of his former chairlift. This letter states that the site must be returned to its natural state by 31st January.falls creek tourist area management committee, chairlift site 3, bob hymans -

Photograph, Margaret Ball, 23 Arthur Street, Eltham, June 1999, 1999
Built c. 1960, home of Mr and Mrs Bennett. Their daughter, Eileen Bennett was a nurse at Judge Book Village. Sold in late 1990s for extension to Safeways. The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. Not all of the houses could be photographed; some because the garden or trees blocked the view of the house, others because of rubbish or cars were in the way, some because people were working on the house or in the gardens at the time.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 5 of 6 stripsFuji 200eltham, houses, streets, margaret ball (pre 1960s houses) collection, arthur street -

woomera
A woomera is a wooden Australian Aboriginal spear-throwing device . It is an extension of the human arm that enables a spear to travel at a greater speed and force than possible with the unaided arm.The necessary tools and equipment for hunting, fishing and warfare were one of the very few items that Aboriginals carried with them from place to place. Most were used for a multiplicity of purposes. Because many were made from raw natural materials, such as wood, generally only partial remains are found today. This woomera is an example of an implement used by early Indigenous people.A flat hand-made dish like wooden spear thrower with curved edges. It has a small spike tied at one end and hardened black gum at the other.woomera aboriginal hunting spear-thrower -

Tool - Portable Sleeper Drill, Early 20th century
This drill was used in the construction of the Eltham-Hurstbridge Railway extension in 1911. The device was placed over the wooden sleeper to drill holes for the iron spikes which held the rail down. Example of tools needed to build railway in early 20th Century in the Diamond Valley.Drill mechanism mounted on wooden frame. Mechanism tilts to enable holes to be drilled vertically (normal) or at angles up to 45 degrees using double hand cranks and gears. This view of Sunbury Railway Station was taken from the corner of Brook and Evans Streets two years after the station underwent refurbishment and extensions and a carpark was constructed adjacent to the station. The Sunbury & District Heritage Association Inc. has a photograph P0663 of the station taken a century ago from the same place, when Sunbury was a small country town. The contrast between the two images is interesting. A coloured photograph of a streetscape with a weatherboard building in the middle distance, sunbury railway station, brook street -

raker saw, c 1880 - 1940
Used in the timber industry in the Orbost district. This is a two person operated cross cut saw which functions as a pit saw. A log is placed over a pit lengthways. The man on the top walks along the log and pulls the saw upwards, and he man below pulls the saw downwards. This saw therefore cuts in both directions. This type of saw was often used in the ship building industry for cutting planks.A long raker saw which has been installed into the Slab Hut Shed in a vertical position as a pit saw. It has a metal handle extension at the top which has a wooden handgrip attached. Towards the bottom of the saw, a wooden handle had been added to the saw. timber-industry-tool raker-saw pit-saw -

Purse Money Filigree, circa early 1900s
This item has historical value as it shows part of the importance of fashionable money containers specific to a more affluent rural family. The period when sheep properties producing high grade wool were providing Australia with the high yield capital return to sustain an ever growing population. This was an era where most of the manufactured goods were imported from England and the European continent. This has relevant significant value as it portrays the earlier reliance that the growing Australian population had from the rural sector. The wealth capital was from the rural sector and the elaborate fashion accessories, such as this money purse, shows how that wealth was utilised. The Kiewa Valley was part of the "rich" farm regions of Victoria and besides gold mines and tobacco plantations, dairy and cattle properties provided for not only the needs of the Victorian region but also the rest of Australia. This gold plated filigree money purse has a clasp on top for fastening purposes and has on either side inside a small extension frame which would have contained a felt/silk padding buffer. The buffer would have highlighted the intricate pattern of the filigree metalwork.hand purse, money purse, filigree women's accessories -
