Victoria's first quarantine station was established at Hobson's Bay in 1840. However with the influx of immigrants during the gold rush, a new station was needed in Port Phillip Bay. In 1852 the "Ticonderago" arrived with 300 passengers ill with scarlet fever and typhus. They were landed at Point Nepean, Portsea, which which was known as the "Sanitary Station" until the 1880's when it's name changed to the Quarantine Station. Daisy Livingstone Smith was born in Linton in 1903, a daughter of Shire Secretary Alfred John Smith (Alf J Smith) and Ada Smith née Watson. After first being privately educated, she attended Linton State School from 1911, and went on to Queen's College in Ballarat (a Church of England grammar school for girls), where she was Dux in 1918. After leaving school she worked as Linton librarian, and then as a financial officer for the Shire of Grenville. In 1941 she married Roy Brown. Daisy died in 1945, and a lectern dedicated to her memory is in St Paul's Church of England, Linton.Black and white copy of original photograph shows head and shoulders of a young woman with dark hair cut fairly short. Boyle, yard porter; the next was the signal adjuster, name not known; P.A. Stuart, lad porter, now A.S.M. at Ringwood. R. Boyle, the yard porter, was killed sometime afterwards right in front of the office. He was caught in between 2 sets of rails by passing trains, one train hit him and threw him under the other train, which cut his head off." "Mail 6/10/49".

John Cox had mining and farming interests at Linton from about 1860. He was an uncle of John Henry Cox. Note: Although an inscription identifies this couple as Mr and Mrs John Cox, there is some doubt about this. Another photograph of same pair shows a young lad's head between the two adults, this image appears to have been painted over or otherwise blocked out in this photo.
