The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. A rare photograph of massed Light Horse in Victoria shortly before mechanisation consigned the horse to history.Black and white photograph of large group of horsemen in ranks waiting in the process of watering horses at a lagoon. One copy of the image claims it to be 8th Light Horse Regiment watering horses at a Murray River lagoon, South Corowa NSW, September 1939; Wahgunyah Troop, C Squadron - this side of lagoon, Lieutenant J. Nott on grey horse in water. A second copy (Cat No 0690) asserts it is 4 regiments of light horse being 8th, 13th, 20th and 4th watering horses near Torquay Victoria, March 1940.On a label on reverse of 0690: "Picture taken about March 1940 when the 13th Light Horse from Gippsland, the 8th Light Horse from Upper Murray, the 4th Light Horse from the Western Districts and the 20th Light Horse from the Goulburn Valley were in camp near Torquay. Mr Cappur Webb of Glendoxey, Seymour, a member of the 20th said the picture must have been taken during and exercise about five miles north of Torquay. “We used to water our horses in that lake”, he said." -

Part of a collection of objects relating to the service of Lieutenant Russell Jones, 13th Battalion. The collection gives an interesting insight into the social life of a young officer during and immediately following the end of the war. Regimental No 3350 later Lieutenant Russel Norman Jones was a 20 year old linotype operator when he enlisted in the 13th Battalion AIF 6 August 1915. He had 4 years cadet service and two years CMF prior to enlistment. He was wounded in action on two occasions and returned to Australia in September 1919 on SS Suevic. Example of community support for men serving overseas in World War 1 (1914-1918). Letter from Neutral Bay Parents' & Citizens' Association dated October 1917 to 3350 Corporal R N Jones D Company 13th Battalion AIF advising him that a parcel has been forwarded to London to be delivered to him for Xmas. The parcel was one of 100 sent by the Association following a successful fund raising "Entertainment & Gift Evening". Field notebook was used by Lieutenant LA Deegan 13th Australian Light Horse Regiment, 1st Anzac Corps Mounted Troops. Book covers the period 20 July 1917 to 1 September 1917.The notebook is well provenanced and is a rare example of the day-to-day correspondence conducted by a regimental officer of a light horse regiment serving on the Western Front in 1917. The contents of the book are of historical significance and were used in "My Corps Cavalry" Doug Hunter, Slouch Hat Publications,1999. Item belonging to Lieutenant Albert John CRUISE born 13/4/1883 at Nathalia in Victoria. Educated at Geelong College. Enlisted in NSW on 29/8/1914 as Private No 86 1st Battalion. Promoted to L/cpl on 25/7/1915 then Lieutenant on 9/11/1915. He was nominated and appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire - Military Division for conspicuous services rendered as follows:- 'During the period 16-19 September to 11th November 1918 this officer has shown conspicuous devotion to duty and great gallantry in the performance of that duty. He has organised salvage parties and was instrumental during the advance in September in making German Dumps of HE material available for use in forward positions thus saving time and transport. His work throughout has been characterised by marked individuality and courage in the forward area and has been productive of far reaching results. He served at Gallipoli and the Western Front. Due to pneumonia and enteric he returned to Australia in early 1916 to recuperate and married before returning in August 1916. In September 1919 he returned to Australia on board HMAT Takadaussie (refer item 363) and discharged on 7/11/1919. He later served full time with the CMF from 15/5/1940 - 17/10/1943. He died in 1952 Insufficient detail to positively identify Lieutenant Peters - possibly Captain Gordon Peters DSO born 5/7/1894 Adelaide South Australia. This set of spurs belonged to Lieutenant Thomas Spencer Howard 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment. Howard was killed in action in the charge at the Nek, Gallipoli peninsula, on 7 August 1915. Howard was a 25-year-old grain dealer from Melbourne when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and was appointed a lieutenant in the 8th Australian Light Horse on 24 October 1914. He had pre-World War One service with 10th Light Horse (VMR), 11th & 29th Light Horse Regiments. They were returned, together with a pair of binoculars, to his family following his death. Lieutenant Des Martin was a member of the Wodonga Troop of the pre-WWII 8th Light Horse (Indi) regiment. He volunteered for the AIF, 12/6/1940 (VX31564) and served with the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion in Syria and New Guinea. He was discharged 11/2/1944 with the rank of lieutenant. He was a horseman of considerable repute and was the author of the book “Australia Astride”. He provided valuable assistance to the 8/13 VMR Heritage Troop when it was raised.
