This photograph is from the McKenzie family sawmill in Avonsleigh (on what is now 1 or 2 Avon Road, at the corner with Macclesfield Road). Four of the men pictured are known: Bob Welch, Ralph Welch, Cliff McKenzie, and Ian McKenzie. It is believed that this photograph was taken in the mid 1940s. There are two other unaccessioned copies of this item in our collection; both are with it in its folder.This image represents the historical timber industry, which played a very significant role in local economies for decades.This item is a printed black and white photograph. George Tamworth had invested in some mines near Tamworth, and realised there was a potential there for extracting clay suitable for pottery use. The pottery opened in 1862. In 1864, it was called 'Wilnecote Company Limited'. Later it became George Skey and Co. Limited. Some of the crockery jars they made have a triangular C & B mark. Crosse & Blackwell were a food production company that needed jars for their products.Good example of a pottery jar used in food production in nineteenth century England. Possibly shows evidence of stains from original food container use. Antique jar. Small circular stoneware and salt glazed bi-coloured jar in mid 19th century style. Top section light or ochre brown with a patterned freize of inlaid small dots. Top opening measures 3 cm and is indented with overlapping rolled lid. Bottom section cream and undecorated. Some reddish or orange coloured stains on side and base. Darker coloured stain marks below most of frieze. This stole came from the Murray family of Warrnambool. Mrs Stan Murray was the daughter of Archibald and Olive Mathieson and Archibald's parents resided in Naringal in the first half of the 20th century. The original Victoria Theatre opened on 16 February 1856 with a season by Lola Montez. She performed several farces and her famous spider dance, delighted the diggers and enraged the sensibilities of respectable people, with Henry Seekamp in the famous "whipping" incident with Montez in Ballarat. Pair of women's leather boots given to the donor by Miss Denbigh of 18 Gordon Avenue, Kew in the 1950s. The Denbigh sisters were the daughters of John Denbigh, a pioneer of Kew, and the first resident of 'Wimba' in Cotham Road. The mid nineteenth century silk patchwork quilt in the collection also comes from the Denbigh family via a different donor. These photographs were taken at a RASVY Corps Formal Dinner at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment in 1966. The formal dinner commemorated the 50th Year Jubilee anniversary of the Royal Australian Survey Corps’ formation. Known personnel in the photographs were GOC Southern Command MAJ GEN Robert William Knights CB, CBE, COL Don Macdonald MID, Director of the Survey Corps and LTCOL Frank Buckland OBE, MID who was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment. A charming example of 18th century Georgian silk embroidery. All the sprigs have a small piece of parchment behind them, onto which they are embroidered. Lining has been replaced, and a viewing area left for study purposes. It is believed that Elma Sarll’s shop was operating in the mid 20th century. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was Director of the Survey Corps from 1942 to 1960 and was succeeded by COL Don Macdonald AM, MID. COL Frank Buckland OBE, MID succeeded BRIG Don Macdonald AM, MID as Director of the Survey Corps in 1967. He served as Director until 1972. BRIG Macdonald AM, MID was promoted before assuming the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. These five black and white photographs were taken at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in the 1960s. The first three photographs are on printed paper and scanned at 300dpi. The remaining photographs are on negative film and scanned at 600 dpi. This fire extinguisher was used for commercial purposes in the Nullawarre Post office. The item was made in England by the Pyrene Co Ltd (1914-1971), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fire fighting equipment in the early to mid 20th century. The extinguisher had a pump action and probably contained carbon tetrachloride. Nullawarre is a small agricultural settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. The Nullawarre area was settled in the late 1860s and 1870s and today has a store and Post Office and a school. Charles Williams was the Post Master at Nullawarre in the early to mid 20th century and also delivered the mail. His wife, Vida was the Post Mistress. This fire extinguisher is of interest firstly as an example of a common item used commercially in the past and secondly as an item that came from the Nullawarre Post Office, used in this commercial building in the early to mid 20th century. This is a metal fire extinguisher which has been painted but the paint is mostly worn away. It is cylindrical in shape with ridged areas at the base and top. It has a clip handle. Stoneware or pottery canisters were widely used throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries for storing and preserving a wide range of kitchen food ingredients. Bendigo Pottery was established in 1858 and is Victoria's oldest working pottery. It was founded by George Duncan Guthrie (1828–1910) who abandoned his potter’s wheel in Scotland to join the Australian gold rush. He found a clay deposit perfectly suited for the production of ceramics, so returned to his former profession as a master potter. The population explosion created by the Australian gold rush resulted in an increased demand for all kinds of locally manufactured goods. The Bendigo Pottery became one of regional Victoria’s most important industrial enterprises. By the late 1800s the Pottery was making all kinds of household wares. One of its most popular lines was the mass produced, affordable and functional earthenware such as these canisters.These items are significant on a state and national level due to the importance of Bendigo pottery as a major Victorian manufacturer whose products were widely used in Australian homes.A group of 3 stoneware and ceramic canisters of assorted sizes.
