Photograph - Sunnyside and Mt Wills, c.1926
Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 35 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. John Chapman has written in 'Bushwalking Clubs - A Brief History', about the establishment in Victoria of the first bushwalking club in 1888, and the popularisation of bushwalking during the interwar period. Henry Christian's 'walks' appear to have been undertaken solely or with a companion/s. This black and white photo is part of a group of photos taken in the Victorian High Country. The page is labelled 'Mt Wills / Sunnyside' and includes photos of landscapes and built structures. Mt Wills and Sunnyside were at the time goldfields north of Omeo. Photograph - Mt Bogong - Tawonga, 06/05/1937
Mount Bogong located in the Alpine National Park and part of the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range, is the highest mountain in Victoria, Australia, at 1,986 metres (6,516 ft) above sea level. The Big River separates the massif of the mountain from the Bogong High Plains to the south. From the nearby town of Mount Beauty to its summit, Mount Bogong rises more than 1,600 metres (5,200 ft), thus making it one of the highest peaks in Australia not only in terms of its elevation above sea level, but also in terms of actual base-to-summit prominence. Mount Bogong is a popular backcountry skiing mountain through winter but only has snow for the mid winter-spring months. It is around 30 kilometres (19 mi) by road and walking track or 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) direct to Mount Beauty. Falls Creek and Mount Hotham ski resorts are also nearby. Camping is relatively safe below the tree line but the summit ridgeline is very exposed. Emergency shelter is also available at Bivouac Hut on the Staircase Spur, and at Cleve Cole, above Camp Creek on the broad ridge to the south of the summit, and Michells Hut on the Eskdale Spur. Mt Bogong is a popular recreational venue in the Kiewa Valley for back country skiing and bush walking and is a favourite with sightseers and popular subject for photographersBlack and white photograph of Mt bogong taken from Tawonga - Thursday May 6th, 1937Handwritten on back of photograph. The papers were compiled by him during his research for his book. The history of Mt Beauty is interesting as the town was unique as it was built by the SECV for their employees working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The histories of the clubs are an example of their development from the 1950s in a remote country town, giving an insight into the lives of the people living there. Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.
Document - Documents (St. Ann’s ), letter, Mid 20th century
These items come from the estates of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie of Warrnambool. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and her sister Agnes (1915-1993) were the daughters of law clerk Arthur Ardlie and his wife Ethel, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. All of the documents relate to St. Ann’s Convent/School in Warrnambool. The Sisters of Mercy established St Mary’s Wyton school in 1872 and the name was changed to St.Ann’s in 1888. Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie would have been particularly interested in the convent building established around the original building of Wyton as this building had been the home of John Ardlie and had been sold to the Sisters of Mercy by their grandfather, William Ardlie. Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie had been pupils at St. Ann’s School. Some of the documents relate to the orphanage established at St. Ann’s in 1881 when an extension was added to the convent for that purpose. The orphanage was closed when a similar institution, Nazareth House, was opened in Ballarat. Thes items are of minor interest as material compiled by the Ardlie sisters, Dorothy and Agnes, residents of Warrnambool in the 20th century. .1 A sheet of paper containing a letter handwritten in black ink and an envelope with the address handwritten in black ink .2 A sheet of paper containing a letter handwritten in blue ink .3 A black and white photograph of St. Ann’s Convent .4 Two sheets of blue paper with rough plans of St. Ann’s building interior .5 A sheet of paper with a black and white sketch of St. Ann’s Convent .6 A sheet of white paper with photocopies of two newspaper cuttingsardlie family, warrnambool, st. ann’s convent -

Photographs- Kiewa Valley House (before and after extensions) & Tawonga District General Hospital- Set of 6 colour photographs
The establishment of Kiewa Valley House, was a significant victory for residents and senior citizens in the Kiewa Valley district. Plans were laid in the mid 1970’s and a proposal was formulated for a 12 bed unit nursing home to be attached to the Tawonga District General Hospital. The need for an aged care facility in Mount Beauty was prompted by recognition of the high ratio of senior citizens residing in the area. At the time residents had to travel to Beechworth, Wangaratta or Wodonga for care. On June 6th, 1980, an appeal to finance a 12 bed nursing wing was launched at a public meeting in Mount Beauty The Hospital and Charities Commission’s development board finally approved the application for government funds to build the 12 bed nursing home in early 1981. The official opening of the nursing home was on March 6th, 1985. Opening of the lounge extensions occurred in May, 1993 Many local residents have taken advantage of facilities at Kiewa Valley House when they became unable to manage independently in their own homes. This has meant they did not have to face the stress of leaving the area and being separated from their local family and friends. Many SEC workers and their families have been residents of Kiewa Valley House over the years.Set of 6 colour photographs of Kiewa Valley House and original Tawonga District General Hospital in Mt Beauty 1 Kiewa Valley House, before extensions, with old weatherboard hospital in background 2 & 3 Official opening of Kiewa Valley House. 4 & 5 Gardens between Kiewa Valley House and Hospital 5. The Loreto Chapel, or Children’s Chapel as it was known, was built between 1898 and 1902. The architect was William Tappin and the builder, George Lorimer. It is built in an English Gothic style with French influence. The stone is Barrabool Hills sandstone from near Geelong with white Oamaru, New Zealand, stone detailing. Building was interrupted through lack of funds but the project was finally completed with a large bequest from the German Countess Elizabeth Wolff-Metternich, who had been a student at the Convent in 1898. The Countess tragically died on a return visit to her family in Germany. The inside of the Chapel is decorated in soft pastel colours with artwork and statuary donated to the sisters by Ballarat and Irish families. The Rose Window over the Organ Gallery depicts St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, surrounded by symbols of the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The windows over the altar depict the instruments of the Passion of Christ. The marble altar features the Nativity scene as was requested by the children. The interior of the Chapel was restored in 1999 through the bequest of past pupil, Lucy Kerley and maintenance is continued with a bequest from past pupil, Eileen Macintyre (McGrath) (https://loreto.vic.edu.au/loreto-college/facilities/loreto-chapel/, accessed 06 June 2019_ Colour photograph of a chapel at Loretto convent, Ballarat. Mt Beauty township, at the head of the Kiewa Valley, is situated at the foot of Mt Bogong. The town was established by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme on the High Plains.Mt Beauty is a popular tourist resort. The main highway from Mt Beauty to the Bogong High Plains is most picturesque throughout the year. During the winter months, Falls Creek provides access to Falls Creek Ski Village for snow sports. Tawonga, 6.5 km north of Mt Beauty, is famed for its trout fishing and camping on the Kiewa River. Deciduous trees make a show of colour during Autumn. The postcards are of historical value showing photos taken at an earlier time. The postcards can be compared to the attractions of the time as they do not include cycling (mountain bikes and road bikes), snow boarding, gliding and paragliding. Advertising for tourism has also changed as attractions are now available on-line. 1. 9 Coloured Photos of Bogong (5) and Visitors Information Centre display (4) 2. Book - Mt Beauty Voters' Roll, Shire of Bright - Voters' Roll 1979 - Mt Beauty Riding, 1979
Electoral roles list people who are registered and eligible to vote at federal, state, territory and local government elections and referenda. Prior to 1990 the rolls list voters in alphabetical order by surname and first names within each Sub-division of an electoral Division of each State or Territory. The roll is useful and interesting for family historians and the study of demographics.Electoral rolls help to locate the residential address of a person in a particular year or over a period of years. They can be used as a substitute for census records for family historians and the history of a particular place, in this case Mt Beauty. Alex McCullough was a resident of Mt Beauty and Councillor in the Bright Shire. 40 pages of firm blue paper with black typed print on one side only in 'landscape' format. Held by three staples.
