George Robert Broadbent (1863-1947), cyclist and map publisher, was born on 3 November 1863 at Ashby near Geelong, Victoria, son of George Adam Broadbent, Lancashire-born draper, and his wife Elizabeth, née Ruffhead. When the family moved to North Melbourne Broadbent attended the Errol Street school, followed his father's trade, and became an early cycling and cycle-racing enthusiast. At various times Broadbent held most Victorian and Australian road records, and two of his performances on solid tyres—203 miles (327 km) in 24 hours on a penny farthing, and 100 miles (161 km) in 6 hours 20 minutes on a 'safety' bicycle—were never bettered. He established records for all distances between 130 and 220 miles (209 and 354 km), and for all times between 8 and 12 hours, at the Exhibition Grounds track in May 1894, and road records for 50 and 100 miles (80 and 161 km) in October 1896. The Australian Cyclist acknowledged him 'the finest road rider that Australia has ever produced'. A foundation councillor of the League of Victorian Wheelmen in October 1893, Broadbent contested the first Warrnambool-Melbourne race in 1895, and was active in the Good Roads Movement. Next year he issued a road map of Victoria, 'prepared … after some sixteen years riding and touring in all parts of the Colony', which indicated general topography, distances, and roads classified as 'good', 'fair' or 'ridden with difficulty'. It was to become Victoria's standard map, and the basis of a continuous publishing programme by Broadbent's Official Road Guides Co.Three Road Maps of Bendigo, Bendigo and Suburbs, Bendigo and Eaglehawk. These cards have been sent to Christina Lawrance (1889-1970). She was born in Williamstown, Victoria and married James Robertson in 1912. They lived in the Gundagai area of N.S.W. on a property named ‘Nargoon’ (sheep and cattle) and they had five children. One of the daughters, Margaret, married Jeffrey (Bill) Whitehead of ‘Goodwood’ near Hawkesdale and the cards have been passed on to us from a Whitehead descendant. It is not known who sent the cards to Christina Lawrance who would have been 16 or 17 at the time. These cards are of interest because they are of Warrnambool scenes and demonstrate the practice at the time (1906) of sending cards that had photographs of local scenes. The photographs, although printed in great numbers, are of historical interest today. The cards are also of interest because of the recipient’s connection with the Warrnambool area – Christina Lawrance is an important person in the family tree of the Whitehead families today. These are four colour post cards in green, yellow and black tonings. They have photographs of the Hopkins River, Warrnambool and the Hopkins Falls on one side. They all have a penny red Victorian stamp and were posted from Warrnambool in 1906. The address is handwritten in black ink. Addressed to: ‘Miss C. These heads and tails dice were used by the troops to gamble in World War 1 and World War 11 and were the pre-cursur to the two-up game which was a popular form of gambling in Australia post World War 11. Later versions of two-up were played with two pennies on a board. A hand made cardboard box containing 18 cubed shaped dice of various colours and sizes. Man and woman stand beside timber tramway track at Wright's falls Kinglake. The tramway was constructed alongside the road to support the large traffic in firewood between the mountains to Whittlesea. The Wright family owned the land on which the Falls were situated and were sold for a penny an acre according to a Wright family story. The nine postcards in this set were donated together and date to the early 1900s. All but one postcard in this set shows images of Warrnambool, in the Western District of Victoria; the other has a London image. The postcards were all printed in Great Britain according to that country’s postal regulations. The fronts of all cards have titles printed in red. Most of the images on the cards are attributed to photographer Joseph Jordan and belong to the Jordan Series. The back of these cards has an outline for a postage stamp, a vertical dividing line and a heading on each side of the line to separate the Correspondence from the Address. However, this postcard is the 'odd one out' in that its location is London, it has no border, it has no reference to 'Jordan' or 'Jordan Series' no reference to the printer, no 'correspondence heading', it is slightly smaller than the others, and it has text in the stamp area that refers to 'inland' and 'foreign' postage, a half-penny inland and one-penny overseas.. Postcards or ‘correspondence cards’ appeared in Britain in 1894. They were plain cards with a space for the message on one side and an address on the other; regulations didn’t allow anything but the address to be written on the ‘address’ side. In 1902 the British regulations then allowed a picture to be printed on the front and the address on the back, so messages had to be written on the picture side. Soon, the regulations changed and the back was divided for a message and the address. New Gaiety Theatre, Strand [London] - The New Gaiety Theatre opened in 1903 on the corner of The Strand and Aldwych, London. The second show performed in the new theatre was “The Spring Chicken” in 1905. The third show followed in 1907. The preprinted postage cost on the stamp outline is ½ d. or half penny; according to The Great Britain Philatelic Society, Great Britain Postcard Stamps were priced 1/2 d. or Half Penny from 1-Oct-1870 to 3-Jun-1916. The postcard is significant for its inclusion with a set of nine postcards, eight of which are images of Warrnambool and its district and photographed by Joseph Jordan. It is also curious for is lack of connection to Jordan. Postcard, one of nine, portrait orientation, coloured print. The image shows a tall three-storey corner building with a statue on its domed tower and smaller towers on the sides. The top two storeys have balconies with columns, and overhang the ground floor, providing cover over the footpath. The foreground has horse-drawn carriages and coaches, and motorised vehicles including a bus. Figures wearing top hats and others in long dresses are in front of the building, which has a sign on the corner advertising the building and its current show. There is no correspondence written on the card. The front of the postcard has a printed red title and an inscription on the image. The reverse has inscriptions and outlines for a postage stamp.
