The donor, whose parents owned an antique shop believed that the evening coat was owned by the family of Cr Morris Nathan and his wife Margaret Frances, nee MacKay. Maurice Nathan was born in Kew in 1914 and died in East Melbourne in 1982. He was a student of Trinity Grammar School, Kew. He was Lord Mayor, and his wife Lady Mayoress, of the City of Melbourne for two terms between 1961 and 1963. The age of the coat, created in a design typical of the 1920s would suggest that it is of an earlier vintage, almost certainly dating from the 1920s, but perhaps earlier. The opulence of the sequinned and beaded embroidery have led to the supposition that it may be an opera coat inherited from an earlier generation.Three quarter length, red and cream silk, padded evening coat highlighted on the cuffs and hem with iridescent sequins, beading and pearls of different shapes and sizes. These decorative features are arranged in a formal design, particularly at centre back. Above the beaded sections are sunbursts outlined in gold beads.Trimmed rabbit fur at collar and cuffs. The sleeves are shaped above the embroidered sections while the hem features a zig-zag profile. Typewriters pre date computers and were used by office workers eg. Secretaries for documents and letter writing. An inked tape was hit by the keys as it moved along which resulted in their imprint being copied onto paper. Multiple copies were made by inserting carbon paper between sheets of paper. The original was easily identified.Used in the Kiewa Valley.Large, heavy, hard plastic two toned grey typewriter. The keys board includes symbols for inches, pounds, dollars, cents and fractions. The margins and size of paper measurements are in inches.The keyboard slopes up to a vertical plane. On top the area is flat where there is a small gap which exposes the metal keys. The cylinder that holds and enables the paper to be moved is long with controls at each end and a large lever that returns the cylinder to the left. Behind the cylinder there is a compartment. The keys hit an inked tape (black or red and black) which forms an impression onto the paper. Mechanisms, using the correct buttons, enable margins etc. to be pre set. This typewriter sits 3 cm high from a base. Vinyl deep red/black cover sits on top covering top and sides to protect the typewriter from dust. The Bow Tie is a type of men's necktie that consists of a ribbon of fabric tied around the collar in a symmetrical manner such that the two opposite ends form loops. Ready-tied Bow ties are available, in which the distinctive Bow is sewn and a band goes around the neck and clips to secure. Bow ties may be made of any fabric material, but most are made from silk, polyester, cotton, or a mixture of fabrics. The Bow tie originated among Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars of the 17th century when the Croat mercenaries used a scarf around the neck to hold together the opening of their shirts. This was soon adopted under the name cravat, derived from the French for "Croat", by the upper classes in France, then a leader in fashion, and flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most traditional Bow ties are usually of a fixed length and are made for a specific size neck. Sizes can vary between approximately 14 and 20 inches just like a comparable shirt collar. Fixed-length Bow ties are preferred when worn with the most formal wing-collar shirts, so as not to expose the buckle or clasp of an adjustable Bow tie. Bow ties are worn by magicians, country doctors, paediatricians, lawyers, professors musicians and by people hoping to look like the above and clowns also wear oversized ones. In the 1980’s fashionable and professional women wore a type of Bow tie. Most men only wear Bow ties with formal dress.
