Bendigo Harriers had their first Cross-country race on Weds 3rd May 1893 and continued to hold weekly races. It is believed the name "Harrier" referred to a British game "hare hunters" in which a "hare", the lead runner would leave a trail of papers for the "hounds" to follow. Now Harriers clubs cover a variety of athletic events including running and jumping.
