Photograph, Vermont Primary School No 3133, 1980's
The first of the Vermont Primary School buildings was erected on 1872. In 1907 a room was built onto the west side of the building and a new classroom and cloakroom were erected in 1922. Due to rising numbers and traffic volume, Vermont Progress Association urged the government to relocate the school buildings to a less prominent site, and new school buildings were erected in Nurlendi Street in the 1950's. The original timber building remained on the site until its removal to the Nurlendi Street site in the 1990's, and is on the city of Whitehorse Heritage Review.Coloured photograph of the Vermont Primary School while it was standing vacant from the 1950's until 1989 when it was moved to the main school in Nurlendi Road, Vermont. Bialik College
Article, 'Mr. Jona Impressed with Bialik Progress', The Australian Jewish Herald, 15 April 1965, 1965
Newspaper clipping, 'Mr. Jona Impressed with Bialik Progress', published in The Australian Jewish Herald, 15 April 1965. 'The progress made by Bialik College and the standard which at present has been attained, is certainly a credit to the headmaster Mr. Chowers, and to all those who have guided the College during its period of growth and development. This was said by Mr. Walter Jona, M.L.A, when he paid an official visit to the college on the invitation of the headmaster, Mr. Abraham Chowers. As one who is particularly interested in the Jewish Day School Movement, Mr. Jona took the opportunity to fully acquaint himself with the contribution being made to the movement by Bialik College which is the only Jewish Day School within his electorate. Mr. Jona toured all the classrooms and was particularly interested in the preparations being made for the Pesach Seder. In Grade 1 he was shown a Haggadah specially prepared for the children's use during the Seder complete with verse and illustrations. On leaving the college Mr. Jona commented, 'At Bialik the obvious enjoyment displayed by the children in their activities derived from both the teaching and environmental influence was most apparent.''shakespeare grove, 1960s -

Photograph, Knox Collection, Beech Forest township, c.1903, c.1903
J.W. Gardner erected premises in Beech Forest which formed the core of a village. No further progress was made until access was facilitated though the development of a narrow gauge railway approved by the Victorian Parliament in 1898. Construction commenced in 1900. From this time Colac and Geelong business interests began investment in Beech Forest and established various retail and service establishments over the next few years. In 1902 three early settlers, Gardner, Charles Buchanan and John Cockerill, divided part of their land or bought land which was sold to businesses. On these subdivisions were created saleyards, general stores, a post office, bakery, blacksmithing, banks, a police station and lock-up, a public hall, churches, a state school, bootmaker, butcher, solicitor's office, hairdresser, billiard's saloon and newsagency.B/W. 188mm x 266mm. Photograph, Narrow gauge construction camp near Colac, c.1900
Construction of the Colac-Beech Forest railway line commenced in 1900 and the first activities were the work gangs and their camps. About 100 men were engaged in laying and ballasting the track while others formed the earthworks and the building of culverts and bridges. The first camp was established eight kilometres from Colac, the second 12 km south, and the remainder spaced at similar distances as the work progressed. The camps were served by butchers and bakers from Colac that visited them as many times each week to satisfy the mens' requirements. Many of the men had their families with them. They all lived in tents that consisted of a wooden floor around which the canvas cover was built. A calico partition divided the eating and sleeping quarters, and all cooking was done in camp ovens or at open fires.B/W. 158mm x 203mm. Document - Former Conrad Heinze Butcher's Shop, 1872
Source National Trust: Conrad Heinz Butchers Shop - Happy Valley Road. This building was a weatherboard cottage evidently built in three stages with the front door in the central part, planked by three paned double casements, six-paned sash windows in the rear section; front section and timber veradah with scrolled vallance. The architect and builders are unknown. The outside doors to the cellar and the simple chimney breast remain a notable feature. The original owner was Conrad Heinz a former mayor of Bendigo who with two brothers opened a butcher's shop in the building in 1872. In 1883 he moved to Mt Korong Road Iron Bark, where he carried on another thriving business and built a substantial house close by. When Conrad Heinz left Happy Valley Road, one brother had died, but his widow carried on the first butchering business with the help of a lad and one of her three daughters. The little shop and residence stood for over a century on the spot, almost untouched by modern progress. The shop was closed for 70 years at most. It was demolished about 1982.Data Forms on the house on Corner of Happy Valley Road and Wells Street, Long Gully, now demolished.
