Leisure object - Doll's dress, Gladys Angus, wife of Dr. W.R. Angus, 1930s
This doll's dress was skillfully handmade by Gladys Angus, wife of Dr Angus, in a similar design to the silk lingerie she made and wore. Gladys made this dress for her daughter’s doll, which was also donated along with its pram and blanket. It is part of the W.R. Angus collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus, surgeon and oculist. The W R Angus Collection spans from 1885 to the mid-1900s and includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. He and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the early planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill, where they contributed to the layout of the gardens. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This silk doll's dress is connected to the history of Warrnambool, as it was owned by the daughter of Dr W. R. Angus and his wife Gladys. It is part of the W.R. Angus Collection, which is important for still being located at the site connected to Doctor Angus, Warrnambool’s last Port Medical Officer. Dr Angus and his wife brought their young family to Warrnambool in 1939 and he remained a resident until his death in 1970. Early in his profession in the town of Nhill, Dr Angus assisted Dr Tom Ryan in his pioneering use of X-rays and in ocular surgery, and Dr Angus later inherited these items. The W.R. Angus Collection includes these medical instruments and other related equipment and is culturally and historically significant as an example of the medical practice of the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Additional items in the collection relate to Dr Angus’ service in the Flying Doctor Service and the Army. The doll's dress is also significant as an example of handcrafting in the early 20th century and represents toys made for and used by children in the Warrnambool community. The doll’s dress is handmade using cream silk fabric. It has floral embroidery on the bodice, a gathered waist, crochet trim at the neck, wrists and hem, which also has a scalloped edge. It has a press stud closure at the back. The doll’s dress was made by Gladys Angus for her daughter’s doll. It is part of the W.R. Functional object - Candlesticks, T. Gaunt & Co, circa 1944
This pair of altar lights is from the St. Nicholas Seamen’s Church, 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria, and was used during religious services there. The Church was operated by the Mission to Seamen organisation. The par of candlesticks was originally donated by Mrs. M. Jackson, as part of the furnishings for the new St Nicholas Seamen's Church in Williamstown, which opened in 1944. The candlesticks were made by T. Gaunt & Co. of Melbourne, a manufacturer, importer and retailer of a wide variety of goods, including jewellery, clocks and watches, navigational and measuring instruments, dinnerware, glassware and ornaments. Thomas Gaunt's photograph was included in an album of security identity portraits of members of the Victorian Court, Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne, 1888. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. No. 611, Set of Pews) The Missions to Seamen, an Anglican charity, has served seafarers of the world since 1856 in Great Britain. It symbol is a Flying Angel, inspired by a Bible verse. Today there are centr4es in over 200 ports world-wide where seamen of all backgrounds are offered a warm welcome and provided with a wide range of facilities. In Victoria the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981 and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. These candlesticks are historically significant for their origin in the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater to seafarers' physical, social, and spiritual needs. It originated in Bristol, England, when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The connection of the candlesticks to the Mission to Seamen highlights the strong community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. Candlesticks, also known as altar lights; are a pair of two polished brass candlesticks. The wax cup has a scalloped lip, the centre of the stem has a bulbous section, and the base has a floral design depicting leaves and grapes. They are inscribed 'Made by T. Gaunt & Co.' This pair of Altar Lights is in our St Nicholas Seamen's Church Collection.Inscribed "T. Accessory - Crochet Purse, 1935
This purse is an example of what is often described as the 1930s anachronistic meeting of industrial Art Deco and the arts and crafts movement, hand crocheted silk meeting geometric frames made of the 'modern' xylonite, an early version of bakelite. The Australian Arts and Crafts movement was at this time very focused on creating a notably 'Australian' design, utilising brown earthy tones and 'natural' shapes, such as this purse's spiral drawing on straw and taffeta purses of previous decades.Circular mount purse with xylonite chain interwoven with brown crocheted chain. Outside brown hand crocheted criss-cross stitch with scalloped edge. Xylonite mount with fleur-de-li patterning, edged with gold and black bead seed bead clusters. Opens with a push latch. Lined with a pink silk jacquard, opening embroidered with pink and green flowers. handicrafts, crochet, bags, handbags, purses, crocheting, wool, silk, cotton, 1930s, 30s, art deco, xylonite -

Plates, Rolfe Saucers x 6, 1864
These saucers are part of a crockery set that belonged to George Rolfe and his family. George Rolfe (1836-1919) was a tea merchant in Melbourne who bought land at the mouth of the Hopkins River in Warrnambool in the 1880s. He had adjoining land and the properties of ‘Shipley’ and ‘Fairy Hill’ and developed ‘Lyndoch’, adding stables, jetty, boat house, windmill and reservoir, chaff and bone sheds and an extensive garden. In 1891 he married Annie Lake and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built the ‘Lyndoch’ house still standing today. ‘Lyndoch’ today is now the site of an Aged Care Facility. This item is part of the Rolfe Dinnerset as described on Victorian Collections at VC001420 and VC001422.These saucers, part of a crockery set, are kept because they belonged to George Rolfe, a prominent property owner and farmer in Warrnambool in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The items, dating from 1864, have social significance showing the type of crockery used by a more affluent family in the 19th century. These are six circular china saucers with a gold rim and ornamentation in a scallop design in gold and teal around the rim and the outer edges. The base of the saucers has a gold rim. One of the saucers has a chip on the edge and four show significant wearing of the inner gold circle. Some of the outside gold edging also shows wear. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Animal specimen - Brown Goshawk Juvenile, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
This specimen is a Brown Goshawk juvenile. The Brown Goshawk is widely distributed across Australia, Wallacea, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Fiji. In Australia, it predominantly inhabits eucalypt forests, woodlands, farmland, and urban areas, while in the Pacific, it is primarily associated with rainforest environments. Historically, it was also present on Norfolk Island until around 1790, potentially representing an undescribed subspecies. However, the limited material available—consisting of a single historical skin and nine subfossil bones—precludes confirmation through scientific analysis. This specimen was originally identified as a Nankeen Kestral and is catalogued as such in the original Public Library and Burke Museum catalogue. The specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen exhibits distinctive plumage compared to its adult counterparts. It has a streaky appearance, with a buff to pale rufous base color on its underparts adorned with bold, dark brown streaks. The upperparts are brown, with a slightly mottled or scalloped effect due to pale feather edges. Its eyes are yellow and legs are a pale yellow. The wings are broad and rounded, and the tail is long and barred.
