Some Chinese came as independent gold seekers; but the emigration of many was due to the enterprise of Chinese merchants, who sent them out under contract to work on the goldfields for a certain time at a fixed wage. Those who came under these conditions were under the supervision of ''head men'', representing the Chinese speculators by whom the funds for the voyage were advanced. Markings: 9 994.GOL. Those who came independently also sent their gold back to relatives in China, and, after making a competence, many of them returned to their homeland to enjoy their earnings. In the six months ending 30th June,1857, 116.903 ounces of gold, worth over £500,000, were exported from Melbourne to China. Markings: 8 994.GOL. But, in general, the exploration of deeper deposits was outside the capacity of the diggers, who lacked both the capacity of the diggers, who lacked both the capital and the technical knowledge required. During the succeeding years of the gold rush decade, many goldfields were discovered; each became the focus of a rush, and the scene of a diggings. (4) The rapid increase in their numbers led to a fear that the future of Victoria as a white colony was threatened. (There were about 42,000 Chinese in Victoria in 1859 - all men, comprising one in seven of the adult male population, In that year, between one-quarter and one-third of the diggers were Chinese.) Slide is a continuation of 1802.85 slide: States that the Gold Office was built of broad palings that could easily be kicked to pieces by a good stout fellow. Previously it had been transported to Melbourne under guard, now upwards of half a million was kept here (Bendigo and Fyers Creek), and diggers slept within a few yards of it. Diggers & Mining. Getting the Gold. Slide: Sinking a shaft to a depth of 100 or 200 feet was a long, laborious and expensive job. But the big difficulty was that the course of the lead could not be ascertained, or even accurately guessed at, until a shaft had been sunk. When deep sinking began, many diggers did weeks of useless work, sinking a shaft down to where they thought the course of the lead lay, only to find that it was not there at all. The party owning the claim would work elsewhere; but each, day, one of them - the ''shepherd'' - would shovel out one or two spadefuls of earth in order to preserve the party's right to the claim. (As a result of the widespread dissatisfaction with the licence system which culminated at Eureka, the licence system and the system of goldfields administration by Goldfields Commissioners were abolished in 1855. For the rest of the gold decade, the digger was required to take out a miner's right - which cost 1 pound per year. Between 1851 and 1854, there was continual unrest on nearly all of the Victorian diggings, due chiefly to the licence system and the repressive methods of its enforcement (though there were other causes - see Unit 8). The diggers held protest meetings; they formed diggers' associations; they sent petitions to the government. At times, serious rioting threatened - as at Bendigo in 1853. Many of the goldfields police were men of poor character, who carried out their duties with blustering arrogance, demanding the production of the licence with threatening language, and sometimes open violence; and hauling off as common criminals men who, by some mischance, did not have their licences on their persons, when, given a few minutes, they could have shown they had complied with the law. Slide: On the more important goldfields, as the number of diggers grew, the Commissioners' establishments were increased, and permanent buildings were erected at their headquarters. The group of tents and buildings forming a Commissioner's headquarters became known as the Government Camp. The Camp included the office of the Commissioner, the licence office, the escort office, the lock-up, staff quarters, and the barracks of the police and any soldiers attached to the Camp.
