Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph taken in the recreation building at the RAAF Base Vung Tau, Johnny O'Keefe and his rock and roll band perform a night show for RAAF Diggers. The Warrnambool Pipe Band was established in 1906 to popularise Scottish music and develop a taste for bag pipe music. It was in recess from 1916 to 1935 and then re-formed. Today the Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums perform regularly in the area. The SECV began investigating four possible sites for an airstrip in Mt Beauty in 1965. The land was owned by the SEC and leased by Mr J. Sharp. It became available on the condition that the land would only be available to the Municipal shire. This land was officially opened as an Airport as an official tourist activity in 1977. It continues to be available to tourists, fire fighters, the air ambulance and the local gliding club.The opening of Mt Beauty Airport has enhanced Mt Beauty township by enabling fire fighters to access the surrounding bush during bush fires, by enabling Ambulance helicopters to rush emergency patients to city hospital, by giving tourists the opportunity to fly in and to give the local Gliding Club the opportunity to store and fly their gliders. 1.
