This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. In using a photo of a Legatee they tell the story of how ex-servicemen give their time and service to the families of 'his comrades who were not so lucky'. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). Bonegilla operated as an army base from September 1940 and by 1943 was expanded to 848 buildings, including a general hospital. It provided training for small arms instructors, signallers, transport workers, bomb disposal and gas warfare personnel. In a response to the need to house the growing number of displaced persons coming to Australia, the Bonegilla Reception and Training Centre began operating in 1947. For some time it was a shared facility but the Army withdrew temporarily from Bonegilla in 1949, whilst still retaining ownership of the site. From 1949-65 Bonegilla Reception and Training Centre operated without a military presence. However, in the late 1960s and Australia’s commitments to the Vietnam War and pressed by the need to find accommodation to train men, especially National Servicemen, the Army negotiated with the Department of Immigration to take over several blocks at Bonegilla in 1965. Thirty-five huts were acquired by the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps as a Recruit Training Centre in which National Servicemen and recruits could attend 10-week ordnance courses. Shortly afterwards additional huts were acquired by the School of Military Survey, which established field-survey practical training areas and special astronomical observation sites as it began conducting courses in surveying. Instructors and trainees co-located at Bonegilla with migrant reception centre. In 1971 the Reception Centre closed and the site reverted to the Army. Progressively after 1971 the Army undertook a major site redevelopment with the construction of Latchford Barracks as the Army Apprentice School. Later Latchford Barracks was redeveloped into part of the Army Logistic Training Centre. Chicory was mixed with coffee to reduce the amount of coffee bean required to be used. This coffee "substitute" was due to the repeated fluctuations in availability of coffee beans (and price fluctuations) in the USA in the late 1800s and early 1900s resulting in the search for substitutes and additives to bulk out the available supplies. This was especially so during times of the major World Wars. Chicory was an excellent choice of fillers as it did not greatly influence the strong coffee bean taste. The first choice in USA households was coffee not tea and the influence of the American servicemen's thirst for coffee was a major thrust into the Australian "colonial" preference for a "cuppa" tea. Rural areas took longer to acquire a coffee "break" but with more and more subliminal advertising through "American" films the rural regions developed a growing preference for coffee, however the tea break alias "smoko" has lingered on.This coffee and chicory blend tin container is very significant to the Kiewa Valley in that it demonstrates that even in rural regions of Australia tastes and drinking preferences have changed by subliminal advertising as time goes by. The American "influence" whether by the "invasion" of friendly troops during the major wars or the avalanche of "American films" has altered some of the "dinky-di" Australian "true blue" tastes and mores. The availability of "straight " coffee supplies to rural areas was also in proportion to the level of all weather transport routes. In the late 1800's and early 1900's road freight had to contend with dirt roads, flooded roads, bush fires and grazing cattle/sheep in rural areas. The easier access that city households had with regard to replenishment of food and drink products, up until the mid 1900's, was severely retarded in rural areas. This extensively rusted tin of "Bushells Blue Label" Coffee and Chicory has an octagonal shaped body with a "push/pull" lid(tin).Three sides has reproduced painted ladies in "Roman dress" ladies picking the coffee beans. Sound and colour. A film about the Shrine of Remembrance which was made in April 1981 (from the label). Documents the history of the Shrine by interspersing images of war with returned servicemen's marches. The film shows archival images of Australia in 1914 and accounts from WWI, which gave rise to the campaign to build the Shrine in the 1920s. Gen.Sir John Monash, after consulting with Legacy, lent his support and it was opened in 1934 by the Duke of Gloucester, becoming the focus of commemoration in Victoria. The forecourt with the Eternal Flame was added in 1954 to commemorate the fallen of WWII and was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II. Junior Legatees are shown paying their respects at one of their annual commemorations. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. They have arrived from country towns to attend Legacy Somers Camp in January 1973. It came from an envelope with other camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The envelope contents are items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. These Constitutions dated 14.11.1952 with the name's , "A.V. Palmer - President" (Bendigo RSL) "N.D. Wilson - President - Vic Branch R.S.S.A.I.L.A". The small booklets were headed "Rules of the Bendigo Returned Servicemen's Club - 1956" As far back as 1950 there was discussion within the Sub Branch re a Club in suitable premises. A property was purchased being 11 McKenzie Street Bendigo with the title dated 9.2.1951, the facility opened on 1.6.1951 but without a Liqueur Licence. Years followed with a failure to be granted one. Finally the facility was sold to Bendigo Legacy and they occupied the building on 7.6.1959 which became known as "Legacy House". This is a very brief version of the events from the Book by Murray Poustie, refer Cat No 8093, The history of the Bendigo RSL. .3) The Rules of the Welfare Committee were in .1) folded in half. The contents of this display case are known as Princess Mary’s Christmas Fund 1914. In October 1914 Princess Mary, the 17 year-old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, launched an appeal to raise funds to produce a Christmas present for every person serving in the British and Allied Forces in World War One. The Christmas box was a silver one for officers and a brass one for other ranks. The box usually contained a packet of cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary but some boxes contained confectionery, notebooks, pencils etc. By Christmas 1914 200,000 boxes had been distributed but it took until 1920 to dispose of the 2,500,000 boxes that were produced. Many of the boxes given to Australian servicemen have survived but few contain any or all of the contents. It is not known to whom this box was sent. This box and its contents are of great interest as an important memento of Australian participation in World War One. This is a rectangular brass tin and its contents – two yellow cardboard boxes which originally held cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary. The five items are displayed within a rectangular wooden box with a removable glass top. The brass tin is embossed with an image in the centre of Princess Mary surrounded by a laurel wreath. The embossing includes the letter ‘M’ (twice) and the names of some of the allies of Britain in World War One. Keighley War Hospital at Morton Banks was originally The Morton Banks Fever Hospital and after local funds were raised, extra wards were built to turn it into a War Hospital. It opened in time to take some of the first casualties from the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 and continued until the end of the war. The War Hospital Register archived at Keighley Library contains 13,214 names of servicemen who were treated there. One of the earliest camps held for Junior Legatees, showing tents, charabancs and fashions of the day. Legatee Stan Savige had a property in the Balnarring area and some camps were held on his property. Names noted on the back of the photos include: Pat Hanna, Aaron Beattie, Stan Savige, Sandy Lowe, Bill Pearce, Lyn Rule, Donovan Joynt, Carl Carleton, George Collins, Bill Pearce, Rupert Hely, Norman Stafford. Some of these were founding legatees. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s. A souvenir from Egypt. It contains a central image of the Sphinx, the Great Pyramids and man seated on camel. There are flags and images of military leaders. The date is unknown but assumed to be from the first World War period. Flags around the central image are from countries allied in World War One, clockwise from bottom left: Sultanate of Egypt (red flag used 1914-1918) ; flag of Belgium ; Russian flag and image of Tsar Nicholas II in top left ; a form of the UK flag with King George V ; French flag ; Italian flag ; and the Serbian flag in bottom right. The connection with Legacy is not known. The founders of Legacy were all returned servicemen who returned from overseas service in World War One so would be familiar with similar sentimental souvenirs that were purchased in Egypt and sent home to loved ones.A record of a type of souvenir from Egypt at the end of World War I. A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, January 1970. Big camp was for older junior Legatees. One of the men appears to be Sir Rohan Delacombe, the Governor of Victoria and patron of Legacy (fourth from the left centre road). Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It came from an envelope with other Big camp photos. The Legacy envelope was marked "P5 Power House" in red pen, and Box 15 in blue pen.
