The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. They are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. This postcard shows the main east-west axial path with a typical Victorian/Edwardian mown grass strip which in turn borders formal shrub beds with herbaceous plantings. The photo was taken after the Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtonia robusta) planted in 1915, which in turn were replaced with the same species in 1987. Sepia postcard of the Palm Avenue at the gardens looking west to a white statue on a plinth. The statue is of Williamstown MLA, Alfred Thomas Clark. Palms and shrubs line both sides of the path and trees can be seen behind the statue. This badge was once owned by Rosemary Dalling, wife of Reverend Alfred 'Bill' Dalling and then passed on to the Dann family - Information provided by Pat Dann ex Hastings Seafarers Centre. According to 'The Melbourne Anglican' website, Alfred Dalling worked: Mission to Seafarers, Sydney 1960 to 1962, Newcastle 1962 to 1968 and Melbourne 1968 to 1972; The badge depicts 'the angel of the revelation' a key symbol used by the earliest established services in the 19th C. of services to seafarers. Although barely visible in the image, the writing on the side of the wagon indicates it belongs to the Marriott family. The man seated at the front with the reins in his hands has been identified as Alfred Marriott. The wagon is loaded with vegetables including cabbages and (possibly) carrots. all nurses at the Alfred Hospital were required to use these boxes to send uniforms to laundry, also all hospital staff who had uniforms supplied. (from previous catalogue): All nursing staff wore hospital supplied uniforms for much of the twentieth century. The Royal Melbourne Hospital ran the 'Central Linen Service' for during this time - doing all the laundry for all the public hospitals in Melbourne. Staff uniforms were laundered separately, everyone had their own numbered laundry case. Staff also had a small printed docket book with duplicate copies (complete with a piece of carbon paper) and the number of uniform items were detailed when the case was sent off to the laundry. Alfred Darby operated a soft drink factory in Henna Street Warrnamboolaround 1890 where Alderdice Brass Foundry now stands. He used the Maltese cross as a trademark. There was also an Alfred Darby operating a soft drink factory at Rochester in 1897/1898 which also had the same Maltese cross as a trade mark on his bottles.
