Equipment - Anchor from the Earl of Charlemont
The Earl of Charlemont was a medium-sized, 878 ton passenger ship built at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1849. It sailed from the Port of Liverpool on 13 March 1853 with 366 passengers plus crew, captained by William Gardner. The first port of call was to be Port Phillip, Australia, before continuing to Sydney with the majority of the passengers. After a passage of 97 days the ship reached Cape Otway on 17 June and set a course for Port Phillip some 56 miles away. At 5.15 a.m. on the 19 June 1853 the ship struck a reef (later named Charlemont Reef) about 1½ miles from Barwon Heads. The anchor was raised by Barwon Grove Skin Divers on June 25 1972. Memorandum - 3 quarto ruled sheets + part of a former poster with a cover note, dated 20/10/1921. Written in ink to Mr. J. W. Duncan General Superintendent by William Pollock Acting Supt. about the issues at the Toorak Road Engine House regarding poor coke, recording the times of the fireman and trimmer, and problems in keeping up the power required due to the high percentage of breeze. Looks at the use of staff to fire and maintain supplies. Handwritten cover note was written on a torn poster from the Brunswick line noting a complaint from Thomson Fireman at the engine house about the lack of assistance. Rev. Thomas Staines Brittingham Woodfull (1863 - 1941). Born Maldon in 1863, but grew up in Prahran and attended the Punt Rd Church. Qualified as a pharmacist. Worked as a local preacher before being ordained in 1887. Appointed to Sandhurst in 1887 before being sent as Conference Evangelist to Tasmania, where he conducted missions. Married Gertrude Lily Abey (1872 - 1941) in 1891. Returned to Victoria in 1893 and served at Kerang, Maldon, Shepparton, Flemington & Essendon, Collingwood, Bendigo, Albert Park, Brunswick, Box Hill. Retired in 1930. Was active in the campaign against the Collingwood tote. President of the Methodist Conference 1923. Father of William (Bill) Woodfull, Australian cricketer of the 1920s and 1930s and Captain of the Australian First Eleven during the notorious "Bodyline" Test series.B & W waist length studio portrait of the Rev. "The Kew Advertiser , published by WD Vaughan Pty Ltd, commenced publication in January 1926 and, before the year's end, a modern printing plant had been established at 128 Denmark Street (demolished). This later became the nerve centre for publication of four other local newspapers: The Hawthorn Standard (1932), the Eastern Suburbs Advertiser (1934), the Coburg Courier (1935) and the Brunswick Sentinel (1936). The last two were later sold to another publisher, and the remaining three merged in 1959 to form the Eastern Suburbs Standard. This, in turn, continued under that name until 1974, when it merged with a counterpart from Doncaster, the Whitehorse Standard, and then carried on (under various names) until 1980." Plaque - Memorial Plaque, Catherine Florence Aviss, 1919
Links to another image in the collection previously unidentified now known as at 2018 to be the children of a seafaring family of Captain and Mrs Aviss. In 1918 the family was re-united with Mrs Aviss' parents after a dangerous journey by sea the first time that the children met their grandparents, Captain and Mrs Frampton also seafarers . Mrs Aviss gave birth to her third child in August 1918 on board the ship. She contracted the "Spanish flu" probably in St John, New Brunswick and died, at the age of 28, on the 3 November 1918 after a week in hospital, leaving her husband with two toddlers and a 3 month old baby. The story demonstrates the respect and support of the Mission for two remarkable families of seafarers and the dangers of the influenza epidemic post WW1.An example of lives and tribulations of a seafarer family who survived the Great War but who also had to deal with the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-1919.Large engraved brass plaque mounted onto brick wall commemorating wife of sea captain. Captain Robert Ure Bain was Adjutant to Lt. Col. Bush, POW Group Commandant from 1942 - 1947. He was chosen to be one of the Australian Army officers who escorted the German POW's back to Germany in January 1947. A German POW and former member of the Afrika Korps made the item and donated it to Robert.Afrika Korps banners, embroidered, one piece of material. Large hemmed square of white/ cream cotton material embroidered with two unfinished Afrika Korps banners. Line drawn around both, to indicate edge/cutting point/unfinished embroidery point. The photograph show banner 1 which has a palm tree & swastika (emblem of the Afrika Korps). Swastika has been left outlined in pencil but not embroidered, probably so as not to create trouble by displaying the now banned swastika: Banner 2 has red stylised German eagle over the number 8. Also in picture is a model of an aeroplane and a framed coat of arms with Braunschweig (a place in north west Germany otherwise known as Brunswick).Banner 1: Afrika Korps (pink lettering); 1941 (light blue lettering). The bright green on was held at the Northcote Town Hall on 26/11/1994. The two women may be sisters (Kidd family) Duplicate image in Album 3 (05665) William Hall operated at 114 Brunswick St., Fitzroy, Victoria, between 1875-1886 (SLV and Sands directory) CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. Map of the MMTB Tramway routes 1925 with a list of first and last cars, along with photographs of Wattle Park, Luna Park, and Studley Park. Provides information for the Prahran and Malvern lines, Hawthorn, Footscray, Essendon, Coburg, Kew, St Kilda, cable tram routes, and buses. Also provides information for passengers. The cover photo is of the front of W 296, with the destination of Esplanade. The map is dated by the opening of the line to West Brunswick as far as Albion St, the City Road to St Kilda line via Sturt St lines, and the electric line in Flemington Road which were all opened during mid to late 1925. See Reference. Shows a number of buildings and locations by a numbered reference list, including the Federal Parliament house. Second of four documents compiled by Alf Twentyman about the history of Melbourne cable trams. The first seven pages list each cable car or trailer (1 to 601) and its depot, including some notes on their individual disposal. Page 15 lists additions to the fleet of cars - 1-7-1916 to 3-6-2024 including numbers and notes. Photos taken at Preston depot, South Melbourne loop, Camberwell depot, Thornbury depot, Preston Workshop gates, Sth Melb. depot, Victoria Parade, St Kilda, Brunswick depot, Victoria Market and Kew depot.
