Carrum is a suburb in the City of Kingston bordered by the Patterson River in the north and Kananook Creek in the south. To the east the suburb is adjacent to Patterson Lakes. The Carrum Station was opened in 1882, when the railway line from Mordialloc was extended to Frankston. In the early 20th century, it was a destination for holidaymakers occupying tents and cabins. The area now consists of older housing and over time there have been many new housing developments.Carrum is located in the area that was originally part of the Carrum Carrum Swamp. The district had originally been the home of the Bunerong people who fished, gathered food and found refuge in the sand dunes. The Swamp was drained in 1879 when the Patterson Cut was formed and became known as Patterson River. Apart from local farmers, fishermen and hotel-keepers, there were few permanent residents until the early 20th century when it had become popular as a beach resort. In the 1920s and 1930s the area became occupied by more permanent residents.Laminated aerial colour photograph of Carrum and Patterson Lakes in the City of Kingston. This book was used for record keeping by the owner of the country local store. It was used to record sold items during each day. Items range from food, cigarettes, clothing, bolts and nails etc. Prior to a store goods were sold by a hawker who travelled from place to place selling goods. Stores gradually multiplied into individual stores focusing on one or two areas of goods. eg. food, clothing, hardware, Now in 2025 goods are mostly bought online and delivered to one's home.This cash book is an example of record keeping and of a general store in the country enabling comparisons to be made with new practices and items required by a country population in the early 1900s. Also the items used at the time.Leather bound Cash Book with yellowing lined pages. 192 pages. Entries on each page give the name of the person, their purchase and cost of the item(s). On the left hand side each customer has a number eg. No. 106 is E. Clutterbuck - this may refer to another book re his account.Embossed on the Spine in gold "Cash Book". The Victorian Historical Journal, first published as the Victorian Historical Magazine in 1911, is the official journal of record and scholarly publication of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. It is the second oldest history journal in Australia, containing a vast collaborative history of Victoria with hundreds of individual contributors and topics. The cover features photos of Frederick Dickson who was convicted of fraud against the University of Melbourne whilst employed there as a book keeper and accountant for 17 years. Frederick Dickson was taken to Pentridge prison on 13 March 1902, where he spent the first months of his sentence in A Division.
