It was collected to be a record of a photo of past presidents. Legatee Simonson saw active service as a commissioned officer in the South-West Pacific area and was awarded the Military Cross. He was part of the Owen Stanley Campaign and also served in Bougainville and New Britain. He was inducted into Legacy in 1953. His father was also a Legatee, Paul W Simonson was inducted into Legacy in 1925. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. Junior legatees on stage in many different costumes, including beef eaters, soldiers, and in naval uniforms. Flag bearers hold Australian, UK, and Welsh flags. Some of the children hold musical instruments. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. This ornamental Sphinx is a memento of the founder of Melbourne Legacy, Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige, K.B.E, C.B., D.S.O., M.C., E.D.O The Sphinx was presented to the then Sergeant Stanley Savige as the 24th Battalion Musketry Prize, whilst he was serving in that unit in Egypt, during the First World War.Sir Stanley Savige founded Melbourne Legacy in 1923. This item is significant as it was awarded to him during his war service, prior to the foundation of Legacy. Brass sphinx trophy. The Sphinx is mounted on a plinth, which is decorated in hieroglyphics made of copper and lead. A special gala performance of Madame Butterfly was performed by the touring Italian Opera company at Her Majesty's Theatre on 8th of June 1955. It was attended by the Governor of Victoria, General Sir Dallas Brooks and his wife, Lady Brooks. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in Austria. "Bozen mit Blick each Osten" which translates as "Bolzano with view to the east". It is addressed to Mr H Caffrey, Chairman Comradeship at Melbourne Legacy. It is not dated and is signed Brian Lucky Luscombe. It says: "While lunching on a balcony overlooking this lovely place, I thought of soup, sandwiches and scones and Melbourne Legacy. And then Mary said "have another glass of red". At 6000 lire a bottle it's not too bad. We escaped the Italian airline/train strike and are now safely in the land of the Sound of Music. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. 'The Torch' is still published twice a year.
