W.T. Rawleigh's & Co. manufactured various household products in a factory in Collins Place, Melbourne, between 1930 and 1935. The W.T. Rawleigh Company was an American company started by William Rawleigh in 1889. The company expanded to both Canada and Australia with the Rawleigh company specialising in medicines, remedies, food additives, cleaning products and toiletries. Due to increased demand, Rawleigh’s required a larger factory and thus built the factory in Dawson Street Brunswick Victoria and by 1950 the factory had been extended to include 98,000 square feet of floor space. The Brunswick factory ceased production in the late 1970s and manufacturing was moved to New South Wales. During the peak of production, more than 200 people were employed in the Brunswick factory and several independent sale representatives sold their products door-to-door throughout the country. The ‘Rawleigh’s man’ was a regular door-to-door salesman of inter war and post-war suburban Melbourne. Rawleigh’s products are still in production today.A significant item as it gives a snapshot into domestic life and social norms of the pre and post war period in Melbourne and throughout Australia and New Zealand. C. Glover and Sons Pty. Ltd. was founded on Brougham Street, Geelong c.1870. They operated as a wool and sheepskin storeroom situated on both sides of Brougham Street; where the current Elders building is located. The store was owned and operated by Joshua Glover with his brother Cyrus. A third brother Arthur also worked at the store. It was a very successful business and employed up to 40 men at its peak. Cyrus Glover died quite young, around 54, with his son Howard taking his place in the partnership at 23. During the Second World War the business was requisitioned by the Australian Government. Their wool was utilised to produce defence uniforms for Commonwealth personnel C. Glover and Sons was a very successful business which reluctantly closed its doors around 1975, as a result of the wool industry taking a downward turn Australia wide. It was decided by the family that this was the only option at the time. Howard Glover was Jan Glover’s (donor) father in law. Jan Glover donated these images to the National Wool Museum in 2021. The photograph shows VR tram 36 at St Kilda Railway Station with the driver in summer jacket raising the rear trolley pole. The tram displays destination Vautier St, an intermediate terminus about three kms from the station. VR tram 29 is also arriving at the terminus with weather blinds and saloon sunshades raised to shunt over tram 36. Its destination sign is indistinct but appears to be Middle Brighton or Brighton Beach. This movement of multiple shunting was common in the afternoon peak. Up to three trams would depart simultaneously following the arrival of a busy electric train from the city. The first tram would travel limited express to Brighton Beach; the second tram also ran limited express to the intermediate terminus at Middle Brighton; the last tram stopped all stops to Vaitier St, then return to repeat the same run. This photograph depicts the façade of the Burke Museum in Beechworth. Originally built in 1857 by the Young Men's Association as the Beechworth Athenaeum, the building provided a public lecture hall and reading room for men at the peak of the gold rush era of Beechworth. The building was turned into a museum and renamed the Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial Museum in 1863 following the death of Robert O'Hara Burke on the Burke and Wills expedition in 1861, as Burke had been the Police Superintendent of Beechworth. The museum has had several additions built onto the property, most notably significant extensions in the 1970s, but the main façade depicted in the photograph has remained largely intact. The architecture is an example of provincial conservative classicism. The Burke Museum contains over 30,000 individual objects, including Gold Rush era items, taxidermy specimens, a Ned Kelly collection, and this very photograph.The Burke Museum itself is very significant to Victorian history. It is on both the Victorian Heritage Register and is part of the National Trust due to its relevance to the history of the Gold Rush period, its architectural features, and its significant collection. The Andrews Labor Government said it would deliver locals in Melbourne’s north-east more peak hour train services and less time stuck at boom gates, and we have. The first stage of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade has been delivered – six months early and on budget. This includes the new Rosanna Station, duplicated track between Heidelberg and Rosanna and the removal of the dangerous level crossings at Alphington and Rosanna. There’s more to do and only Labor will deliver the next stage of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade to give local commuters more train services and a more comfortable commute. The $530 million project will include a brand new train station at Greensborough and the duplication of three kilometres of track between Greensborough and Montmorency, and 1.5 kilometres of track between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen to allow more train services during the morning peak. This will allow trains to run every six and a half minutes at Greensborough, every 10 minutes at Eltham and Montmorency, and every 20 minutes at Hurstbridge, Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen – as well as two extra Hurstbridge express services. Locals on the Labor Government’s new Mernda line will also get five extra train services during the morning peak, with a major upgrade of the Clifton Hill junction where the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines connect. Labor will also protect the Eltham Trestle Bridge – the last remaining timber bridge on Melbourne’s electric train network – which has local heritage protection and is an important part of the area’s character. The Liberals will leave this bridge to rot and demolish the nearby childcare centre and football club with their under-cooked and under-costed promise to upgrade the Hurstbridge line. Only Labor will protect this important piece of Melbourne’s history with planning work to be carried out for a long-term solution as part of the project. Stage two of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade will create more than 950 jobs, with construction to start in 2020 and finish by 2022. Glasses, also known as eyeglasses or spectacles, are frames bearing lenses worn in front of the eyes. They are normally used for vision correction or eye protection. Pince-nez is a French style of spectacles, popular in the 19th century, that are supported without earpieces, by pinching the bridge of the nose. The name comes from French pincer, "to pinch", and nez, "nose". Although pince-nez were used in Europe in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, modern ones appeared in the 1840s and reached their peak popularity around 1880 to 1900 A solid bridge piece is moulded to fit the curvature of the bridge of the nose. They are anchored onto the bridge of the nose via two small spring-loaded clips terminating in special nose-pads made from bone or tortoise shell on metal called plaquettes, which are tweezered apart for placement on the face through applying pressure to two small lever-like finger-pieces located on the front of the bridge. Plaquettes could be either hinged and flexible, permitting a better fit, or static as in the older examples of this type.. One of two types of four wheel skips widely used on the Wonthaggi Coal Fields for transportation from the underground workings to the surface screening and loading areas. Haulage underground was accomplished by the use of pit ponies, whilst an endless rope system was used to bring the skips to the surface areas. Much of the coal for the colony of Victoria was sourced from Newcastle and the Hunter Region in New South Wales, along with local supplies from private and co-operative coal mines at Outtrim, Jumbunna and Korumburra in Gippsland. After the 1909–1910 strike by coal miners in the Hunter Valley, the Victorian state government were determined to ensure stability in local supplies of coal. The State Coal Mine and the town of Wonthaggi came into being in 1910 to supply coal for the Victorian Railways. It was one of the largest and most dangerous collieries in Australia. At its peak in 1926 the mine produced 2,435 long tons (2,474 t) per day, with the Victorian Railways buying 90% of production. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people. There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future, Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. When Carl Sandner began Sandner and Sons Eucalyptus Distillery in 1875, he probably had no idea his archives would end up in the National Library. The distillery operated until 1967 and the Uley Street site was the subject of archaeological monitoring in 2011 prior to Bendigo’s new ambulance station being built there. But his great great grandson Alec Sandner handed over some mint-condition documents that he has held on to for many years. “I had this tin and the more I opened it, the more interested in it I became,” Mr Sandner said. “There was a letter from the Kaiser in 1888 because the business had written to them asking them to endorse. They had politely refused. “There was also a letter from the Italian consulate saying the King of Italy was satisfied with the product he received. The former Albion (West) Woollen and Worsted Mills is a functional structure which has been built in stages, possibly dating from the 1880s, with the earliest sections near to the Barwon River.The Worsted mill operated for about 50 years and at its peak employed around 500 people. In 1973 the mill merged with the British John Foster and Sons Company under some controversial stock and shareholding issues. The mill continued for a short period before closing at a time when much of the Australian textile industry was finding it difficult to compete with overseas operations. In the 30 plus years after the closure, the site was used for several ventures, including the Mill Vintage Markets and a vehicle trim manufacturing operation. In 2011 the site was purchased by Little Creatures of Western Australia to become their main brewery for the eastern states of Australia. Now owned by the Lion Group, Little Creatures started their 60 million dollar transformation of the old mill in 2012. Finally, in 2013 these former walls of industry were soon rattling away to the sounds of a different type of industry, as the first bottles of beer made their way out of the Geelong Little Creatures Brewery. The remaining building of the former Albion Woollen and Worsted Mills has historical significance as one of Geelong's major woollen mills. The venture has operated on the same site for more than a century. The Albion Woollen Mill was one of the four key sites along with Victoria, Barwon and Union Mills that was established in the late 1860s to mid-1870s. These mills were in constant operation on the west side of the Barwon Bridge over the last century and led to Geelong's fame as milling and scouring locality. The Albion Mill was probably the most successful survivor of the early private company operations. It was regarded as a model mill in the late 1880s and was, from all accounts, well-planned and organised with machinery on a par with the great mills of England. It produced high-quality tweeds. Together with the (now demolished) Union Mill it was regarded as the borough's principal industry over the 1870-1900 period and was one of Australia's most significant producers of tweed by 1900. These two mills were more successful, competitive and long-lived than the Barwon and Victoria Mills. The remaining building form is an important reminder of the private ventures of both the Albion and Union Mills and represents a key site of spinning, carding and finishing as well as scouring and dying that occurred in the lower section near to the river. The loss of the adjacent former Union Mill is unfortunate because the complex, together with the former Collins Union Mill office building, was an important reminder of the success of these industries and the reputation they earned for the Geelong region as a centre for quality textile products. A thank you card that was sent by the Sund family to attendees of a function that was held some four months after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires that destroyed the majority of the township of Marysville. The Sund family owned and operated a timber sawmill in Marysville. Sund's Sawmill (historically operated by Arthur & John Sund and often referenced locally as Sund Stenco) was a prominent mid-century timber mill located in Marysville, Victoria. It played a central role in the region's booming post-war logging era. The mill was highly active during the 1950s. This era marked a peak for Marysville's timber sector, with over 300 men employed across multiple local mills, sustaining nearly 1,000 residents. According to Victoria Government Gazette records from 1958, the Sund brothers operated commercial goods vehicles to transport Mountain ash and other hardwood logs from forest landings in the Mt. Gordon area directly to their mill in Marysville. Sawn timber from the Sund Bros mill was primary distributed to Millard's timber yards at Mt.
