A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue.The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. They are historically and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria because Watson and Harvey's designs exhibit diversity in integrating civil offices, they accommodate the apex of road junctions, and they demonstrate a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings. 35mm colour transparency of the facade of the Kew Post Office on the corner of High Street and Cotham Road. Raoul Couture was a high-end fashion house based in Flinders Lane from around 1955 until 1964. Established by designer Ralph Samuel, who also owned Hartnell of Melbourne (circa late 1940s-1971), Raoul was the business's premium label. The head designer was Leonard Legge, who later worked for Prue Acton. Brighton Historical Society holds a small collection of Hartnell and Raoul Couture garments, including a Gown of the Year Award-winning dress donated by Ralph Samuel.Red felted wool coat with red silk lining, fastening centre front with four large square-shaped buttons. Peter PILVEN (1956- ) Born Ballarat Peter Pilven is acknowledged by his peers for his high level of tacit skills, including throwing, and for his sound technical knowledge of materials.Training with John Gilbert's Edinborough Pottery from 1972-1975, Pilven trained with Joan Campbell in Fremantle in 1976. In 1977 Peter Pilven obtained a Diploma of Fine Art (Ceramics) from Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University). The following year he worked with Ian Dowling at Geraldton, WA, and with the Western Australian Aboriginal Education Unit in 1979. He next trained with Alan Cagier-Smith in England between 1980 and 1981. Peter Pilven established his own studion in 1982.Hand built anagama [woodfired] stoneware. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. Construction of service road in front of the former Ann Dowling (Miers) 1866 Crown Grant, Title dated October 1870. She married Henri Miers in 1867.Their house was located on the site near the Myers Gully part of Ryans Creek. Built in 1867 and later named “Burnbank” by Martha Myers after the Street in Ballarat were she lived before arriving in Melton in 1907. She married Frederick Myers in 1908. He died in 1963, and Martha moved to a new home at 5 McKenzie Street Melton in 1968. Attempts made by the family to retain the historic cottage were unsuccessful. A demolition order imposed by the Housing Commission and it was pulled down by the family. Federation University Mount Helen Campus was open to students in 1970. In that year Mr Dowling as photographed beside a big Tasmanian bluegum which was used a the centre Mount Helen Campus concept plan, and later became known as the Tree of Knowledge. Mr Dowling watered the tree after it was planted by his mother, Elizabeth Downing, on Arbour Day 1896. Mrs Downing raised her large family on the site of the Mount Helen Campus, which included an orchard and milking cows. The Tree of Knowledge is actually two trees, the trunks have fused together over time, and there is further evidence of fusion. The Downing farmhouse was situated in the vicinity of the present Administration and Caro Conference Centre buildings and the tree was planted beside the "dunny". It was carefully watered by the nine Downing children from a brick-lined well situated under what is now the Albert Coates Building. As the tree grew to maturity, it was used to hang a meat safe after slaughtering a sheep for the family table. Some years ago, when the foundations were being dug for the E-Building, an old rusted percussion pistol was found. One of Mrs Downing's sons, at that time well into his nineties, remembered getting into trouble for playing with it without permission, and losing it. The land was purchased in 1966 as part of a 241-acre site for Ballarat's new tertiary institution. When the architects and planners inspected the site, they decided "The Big Tree" must remain as a central landmark in preparing the layout of the campus amenities. In 1982, the spread of the tree was 36 metres, girth 7 metres, and height 36 metres. By 2003 the spread was 39.5 metres (N-S) and 35.5 metres (E-W), girth 7.75 metres, and height 42.5 metres. Robin Boyd FoundationPainting, Arthur Boyd, Wheat Fields Behind Rosebud, 1938
In 1938, Robin Boyd's grandfather Arthur Merric Boyd offered Robin his first commission, a studio for Robin's first cousin Arthur Boyd on the family property at Murrumbeena. This painting by Arthur Boyd was part of Ralph Madder’s estate and inherited by his daughter, Patricia, Robin Boyd's wife. Ralph Madder (1892 - 1986) was Arthur Boyd’s uncle and employed the young Arthur in his calcimine paint factory and bought the occasional painting to help the young artist. This painting dates from a later time when Arthur was living with, and looking after, his aged grandfather Arthur Merric at Rosebud (see the book “The Boyds” by Brenda Niall pages 188-9). “Wheat fields behind Rosebud” did not come to 290 Walsh Street until after Ralph Madder’s death in 1986. Note: Robin Boyd's uncle Merric Boyd (1888-1959) married Patricia’s aunt Doris Gough. This means that Arthur Boyd was a first cousin to both Robin Boyd and Patricia Madder. This insulator was used on phone wires. Insulators were originally designed to keep the wires linking telegraphs and telephones insulated from the wooden poles that held them aloft. Prior to 1925, Australia relied solely on insulators imported from other countries. Glass insulators were first manufactured in Australia in c. 1926 by Australian Glass Manufacturers. Their factory was, and still is, located on South Dowling Road in Sydney. Australian Glass Manufacturers (A.G.M.) had developed a toughened type of glass very similar to Pyrex glass. Since the Pyrex name could not be used due to trademark infringements, they called their glass AGEE for Australian Glass. Many fruit jars, insulators, pie dishes and other glass items were manufactured with this AGEE trademark during the 1926 to 1940 period.Glass insulators are rapidly becoming a thing of the past in Australia with open-wire communication lines rarely existing near metropolitan areas. The remaining open wire lines are being abandoned and dismantled everywhere with very few insulators being saved as interest in them in Australia is quite limited.
