Booklet - School Bell from the sea - Bogong State School
This booklet tells the story of the bell from the "S. S. Santhia" and how it came to Bogong State School, Victoria. "Santhia" belonged to the British India Line. On 6th November 1943 she was in service as a troopship when she caught fire and capsized at No. 3 Garden Reach Jetty, Calcutta. Due to the additional weight of water pumped into her to extinguish the fire, "Santhia" heeled over and remained in the mud of the River Hooghly until a successful salvage was completed in January 1946. The salvage operation was carried out by Captain J. P. Williams of Melbourne and his team of Australian divers nine and a half months after the commencement of operations. "Santhia" was the sixty seventh ship salvaged by Captain Williams. "Santhia's" Bell was presented by Captain Williams to Mr G.G. Jobbins, Chairman of Commissioners for installation at Bogong State School. The ceremony of presenting the bell took place on 21st February 1947. The bell bears the following inscription:- "Presented to G.G.Jobbins, Esq., Chairman, State Electricity Commission, by Captain J.P. Williams for Bogong School, on December 6th, 1946. This bell was recovered from the wreck of the "S.S.Santhia" sunk in the Hooghly River, Calcutta, and raised by an Australian salvage party."This booklet is significant because it documents an unusual event linking Bogong State School to a World War II salvage operation.A booklet consisting of images and text which tells the story of S.S. Santhia, of her sinking while in service as a troopship, of her subsequent salvage and how her bell came to Bogong State School in Victoria's High Country. The booklet consists of 12 pages including the cover. It consists of text and images. Animal specimen - Sea Urchin
This sea urchin shell was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Casino (1882 – 1932) between the late 1960’s to early 1970’s. It is part of the John Chance Collection. The coastal trader SS Casino (1882–1932) had a run of almost 50 years along the coast of Western Victoria. She traded goods and food as well as carrying passengers from port to port on her many voyages. This vase may have been included in her cargo or could have been amongst the personal luggage of the people on board. The sea urchin shell is significant as an example of underwater animal life existing in Victoria the 1960s. It was recovered by John Chance, a diver from the wreck of the S.S. Casino in the 1960s-70s. Items that come from several wrecks along Victoria's coast have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. The urchin is connected with the S.S. Casino, which played an historical role in Western Victoria, providing transport, communication and trade along the coast between Melbourne and Portland in the late 19th and the early 20th century, visiting the ports at Apollo Bay, Warrnambool and Belfast (Port Fairy). The S.S. Casino was the only regular trader with normal passenger accommodation along the West Coast and the only Western District steamship that was in service between 1854 and 1939, and to be represented in the Victorian Heritage Shipwreck register, and to have been wrecked in the Western District, and to have the wreck located, and to be accessible to divers. The wreck of the S.S. Casino, and its associated relics, is considered an important part of Victorian and Australian cultural heritage and is now protected as a Historic Shipwreck under State and Commonwealth Law in the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976). Sea urchin, global shape, beige colour. Urchin has two naturally formed holes, the larger being the mouth. Ten segments radiate from top to bottom, each with a row of small white raised circles.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, s.s. casino, john chance, west coast trader, apollo bay, sea urchin, south west victoria, sea life -

Photograph - Black and White, Ballarat Teachers' College, 1947
Ballarat Teachers' College was opened on may 4th, 1926, at S.S. 33, Dana Street, with an enrollment of sixty-one students, its original staff consisted of the Principal, Mr W. H. Ellwood, M.A., m.Ed. (Chairman of the Teachers' tribunal from its inception in 1946 until 1954), Miss A. Bouchier, B.A., and Mr A.B. Jones, B.A. (Lecturers). In 1927 Miss P.A. Hamano joined the staff. Teaching practice and special rural school work were carried on in schools in or near Ballarat - drawing, crafts and singing were taught by local teachers. In 1927 the college moved to the old Ballarat East Town Hall (remodelled for their use) in Barkly Street. During 1927 the numbers in the College were augmented by twenty-six Manual arts students who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Arts students continued till 1930, when, on grounds of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers' College.\During the four succeeding years approximately sixty students annually entered the primary course. Inclusive of Manual Arts students, and private fee-paying students, exactly 400 trainees passed through the college in its brief span of life (1926-1931) Fourteen years were to pass before they were again opened to students on February 2nd, 1946. The college was re-commenced at S.S. Dana Street under the guidance of Mr W.F. Lord, M.C., M.M., B.A., Dip.Ed., (Acting Principal 1946-1950), and a staff consisting of Miss E.B. Hughes, B.A., Dip. Ed., Mr C.B. Bryan, B.A., V.Com., Dip.Ed., Miss M.H. Miller, L.Mus.A., and Miss G. Kentish, Dip.Phys.Ed. The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister for education at that time, the Hon. F. Field, M.L.A., accompanied by the Hon. T.T. Hollway, M.L.A., and the then Director of Education, Mr J.A. Seitz. It was originally intended to cater for women students only (for whom 130 Victoria Street was purchased as a hostel) but, at the last moment, men were also accepted. A co-educational college was thus set up instead, and has continued as such. The original Staff has been considerable augmented, and the number of Students has been more than trebled. 1951 saw the introduction of the two-year course, successful students being presented with the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate at the final College assembly each year. In December, 1855, College held its first Graduation Ceremony, with its own Graduation hymn, the words of which were written by Miss C.M. Canty of the staff. Mr Ellwood, former Principal, delivered the occasional address and presented the Ellwood Prize to the outstading student of the year (Mr C.P. Handreck). Students who had successfully completed the course received their certificates from Mr E.B. Pederick, Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. College accomodation having been strained for several years, it was pleasant news when tenders were called in July, 1956, for the building of the first section of the new Ballarat Teachers' College in Gillies Street, near the Botanical Gardens. At the beginning of 1958 the new College was occupied, and staff and students have appreciated greatly the appointments and cacilities of the new buildign. In 1968 the three-year Diploma Course began, co-existent with the other courses which will continue during the transitional period. Successful students in the course receive the Diploma of Teaching (Primary).Black and white photograph of students and staff of the Ballarat Teachers' College.
