Private Stanley Cameron was killed in action in the attack on Tobruk, North Africa on 21st Jan.1941. He was serving with the 2/8th Battalion 2nd AIF. Age 33. The Prince of Wales made an unofficial visit in 1920 and stayed with Billy Hughes in his holiday home. Stanley Savige is seen as the founder of Legacy when it was founded in Melbourne in September 1923. He was born in Morwell Victoria on 26/6/1890. He served in the Australian Army between 1915 and 1946, including service in both World Wars. Photo of Major-General Sir John Gellibrand taken in uniform. He established the Hobart Remembrance Club in 1923, which was an instant success. Gellibrand wrote to Stanley Savige who had been Gellibrand’s Staff Captain and suggested he should do something similar in Melbourne.Of national significance as Gellibrand is considered to have influenced Stanley Savige to commence the process to form Melbourne Legacy in September 1923. Camp Premises Agreement and negotiations mentioned on page 3. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with camps on the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. These documents relate to those buildings. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Including two other camps in the Somers area: Lord Somers Camp and the Somers School Camp (owned by the Education Department). Camps provided for junior Legatees have been very important from early in Legacy's history. In the 1920s Legacy started camps at Stan Savige's property at Balnarring. By the 1930s a permanent camp kitchen and building had been built at Somers Camp. The booklet gives a historical account of the early days of establishing Legacy. It is a personal reminder of the contribution made by Legatee Stan Savige. The account is an extract from 'There goes a man', the biography of Stanley Savige, the whole of chapter three plus a lead in from chapter two (pages 123 to 176 of the book).Significant in that the booklet reminds the reader of the difficulties of establishing a charity and taking the idea from a thought, to funding and recruiting like minded people to develop the idea.Printed paperback book with blue cover and white pages and black type.Front cover.
