Copy of Rose Series Postcard number 3762Copy of Rose Series Postcard #3762 showing Bella Vista Guest House at Olinda. This image is c1940s and shows the tennis court in the foreground. Bella Vista was built by Edmund Boulter in 1903. It comprised two large buildings with a walkway linking the balconies at second storey level. Views of Westernport and Port Phillip Bays could be seen from the rooftop lookout. Bella Vista was reputed to accommodate eighty guests. Hand drawn map of Belgrave Heights and its 9 hole golf course, between 1930 and 1943 created by Betty de Coite nee Woods, who holidayed in the area with her family. Map drawn in marker. Photographs attached, including a view of the golf course, Fern Glade Tracks, Lockwood Rd, the dam at Marama Rd corner, The Crescent, the path near the club house, and a wagon near golf course. These photos were taken by members of the Woods family. Map highlights Lockwood House at the corner of Lockwood Rd, the 9 hole golf course, and Sunnyside guesthouse. Club house at Lockwood Rd is later the site of the Convention Centre. Above club house is Fred and Ruby Cook's House. -

B&W photo of a scene in Belgrave, taken Easter 1922 presumably by Miss Field. The view is downhill towards a paddock surrounded by trees. There is a cluster of perhaps half a dozen animals which may be cows or horses They are standing near fencing. There appears to be a building further down the slope and possibly another building to the right of the paddock. On the treed hills in the background another two or so buildings are visible. On the back of the photo 'Belgrave Easter 1922' is written in pen. -

B&W photo of a scene in Belgrave, taken Easter 1922 presumably by Miss Field. The view is of Beauty Bend on the Monbulk Road where it crosses a small gully. Two men and a woman are standing on the near side of the fenced-off gully, another group people, perhaps two men and four women and girls, are sitting and standing on the far side of the gully, and a further two people are at the right of the photo. There are trees and tree ferns in the background and two signs are visible, attached to trees and possibly pertaining to a guesthouse further up the hill and accessible by a path which is just visible. On the back of the photo 'Belgrave Easter 1922' is written in pen. -

Kew Historical Society IncPhotograph - River Yarra in Flood from Kilby Road
Flooding of the Yarra Valley, including that section of the Yarra bordering Kew and Kew East in the north and west of the municipality, was a regular occurrence. Extreme flood events of the Yarra River are recorded to have occurred in 1891, 1901, 1916, 1923 and 1934. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. Kew Historical Society IncPhotograph - Flooding of the Yarra River in North Kew, 1934
North Kew, now divided between Kew and Kew East, bordered the Yarra River. As such, it was a region subject to flooding in the Yarra Valley. Development beyond this point (ie Kellett Grove) was limited by the City of Kew's planning regulations. Prior to urban development, the area since European settlement and the first land sales in the district in the 1840s, had been used for dairy farming. Small sepia snapshot taken from the river ramp of a house at 8 Kellett Grove, in what was then known as North Kew. The point of view is from a backyard looking towards Fairfield. Beyond the fence line are two almost submerged houses. A number of people are in a motor driven boat midstream. Fairfield at this period, (ie 1934) was noted for its limited river side development.
