Public Artwork, Harold Edward Pompey Elliot Memorial by Louis Laumen, 2011
Harold Edward 'Pompey' Elliot was first and foremost a soldier. Schooled in Ballarat, he spoke often of his love of battle, and the sheer beauty of the fighting troops. This contemporary bronze sculpture has detailed elements of the uniform and posture of the military of the time and stance of a man sure of his own strength and willing to command in the harshest of conditions. Signed by the artist along the sword scabbard. Stamp of foundry marking on the boot edging. The four plaques surround the sculpture and plinth detail part of the story of the Major-General and Senator. Leading surgeon and academic Sir Albert Coates (1895-1977) is one of Ballarat's most celebrated sons. A medical orderly during WWI, he returned home to become a pioneering neurosurgeon. A medical man in the worst of circumstances, Coates is often mentioned for his compassion and care in his role as a doctor in the Burma-Siam Railway POW camps. The bronze statue by Louis Laumen captures his down-to-earth nature. A sea serpent or lake monster had been frightening people in the Snowy Mountains area. The Flying Dogtor discovered that it was only Crafty Carson Carpetbag, the sneaky snake in disguise. But Crafty and Old Man Redback caught the Dogtor, and held him in a cave where there was a dark, cold well of water so deep that they said it connected with the bottom of the ocean. And the Dogtor, helplessly bound up with ropes, fell into this well. Stawell East. This may be mentioned in Maynard Ord's Book (Stawell Past & Present) From records many sales took place there as furniture, land sales, shares, commodities, auctions. Meetings were also held there, evidently a meeting place for miners. Donated by grand daughter of Edith and Ron Palmer. Bride Ellen Lidgerwood married Ron Mathers on 4 September 1937.The Best Man was the brother of the Groom, George Mathers. The bridesmaid was the sister of the groom, Miss Mathers and the flower girl was the niece of the bride, June Lidgerwood. Dress worn by Ellen at her wedding and Veil worn by both sisters Edith and Ellen Lidgerwood at their wedding ceremonies, Edith in 1936 (see NA3817) and Ellen in 1937Prominent Box Hill families1937 cream seersucker dress featuring a cowl neck and long sleeve, slit at shoulder to create cowl effect. Slim at lower arm to a point over the hand and fastened at seam with press stud. Bodice cut on the cross under the bust. Cut on the cross figure fitting skirt to the floor, complete with long train. On the back is a slit opening fastened with hook and eye and glass clear buttons. Below the slit are eight glass buttons with false rouleau button loops. This image could be one of several formal occasions attended by Lady Maie Casey and Lord Richard Casey, as both were dedicated patrons of International House. In March 1963, Lord Casey opened the Samuel Wadham Wing, named for the man in the centre of this image. Samuel Wadham (1891–1972) was a professor of agriculture at the University of Melbourne and chair of the International House Council from 1959 to 1969. This photo by Keith Kings, a railway photograph of QGR locomotive 748 crossing the complex arrangements of tracks at Woolloongabba - three tram tracks, one trolley bus route. The photographer noted that trains could block all tram lines at times. Trains were always proceeded by a man carrying a red flag and ringing a bell. One of a pair of separate half-length studio portraits of an unidentified man and a woman photographed using the daguerreotype process. Both portraits are contained within pinchbeck frames, bound in brown-tooled leather cases, with red, cut-velvet binding. Each daguerreotype required an individual negative, presented to the sitter as a positive, and was not reproducible. Due to an exposure time that could extend to many minutes, people were often seated for portraits. Sitters were almost exclusively drawn from the middle to upper classes because of the cost of production of the photograph. It is assumed that the subjects of the two daguerreotypes were unidentified members of Gwen Steele's family. They are the earliest photographs in the pictures collection.Half-length studio portraits of an unidentified woman photographed using the daguerreotype process. The portrait is contained within a pinchbeck frame, bound in a brown-tooled leather cases, with red, cut-velvet binding. The portrait of the woman is notable for her centre-parted hairstyle with the fullness of the hair drawn into a single chignon at the base of the neck. This style set off the tilted-back angle of bonnets and hats. The seated woman wears a dark silk day dress with a voluminous skirt. Three fieldsmen stand close, as a bowler prepares to underarm throw towards a man holding a bat. Colour slides of an annual dinner in 1962. The slide shows groups of legatees during the evening, the venue is not known. It is possible it was the induction of the new president. A different man is was sitting in the President's chair compared to other slides. In 1962 the President was JD Lobb. Or it may be the annual conference of Legacy Clubs. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Letter, Biography of Lieutenant-General Sir Stanley Savige, 1957
Series of documents recording the third progress payment to W.B. Russell for writing 'There Goes a Man', his signed receipt, outline of progress and the way in which the payments wasere used. He notes four main fields of activity - sifting and arranging Savige's own records, research and interviews in Canberra and Sydney, background reading (newspapers etc.), and the writing of the first two chapters. Most of the first progress payment was directed to reimbursement of salary lost whilst working full time on the book, as well as travel and accommodation expenses.Part of the story of how the book 'There goes a Man' came to be created.Typed documents, black on white. It was with 11 other photos of World War One that had been mounted on board for display at Legacy House at some stage. When they were taken off display they were put in the archive cabinets. Newspaper clippings and a photo of Stan Savige's funeral from a file about the life of Stan Savige. The file contained documents pertaining to the creation of the book 'There goes a man' by W.B. Russell (catalogued separately) as well as these newspaper clippings and photo of Sir Stanley Savige's funeral. The newspaper features refer to the portrait by E Buckmaster submitted to the Archibald Prize competition (00634.4 and 00634.5, page 7 missing) as well as to the book (00634.6). Photo shows the first build of the upgraded Y class design classified Y1 Class 610. Four of these Trams were built in the MMTB Preston Workshops in 1930, 610 to 613. There was one solitary Y Class tram 469. They were built with the intention of evaluating one-man operation. Due to their higher cost and Union resentment, the MMTB resorted to the proven W Class tram design. It is fitted with a route number box. The tram entered service 26/3/1930. Photo of a cable tram set - saloon trailer No. 63 in Collins St at Spencer St. The grip car is not fitted with staunchions and there are no destination signs on it. The trailer is lettered for the "Spencer & Brunswick St Fitzroy" route with its rocker panel highly decorated. In the background are a building for the Agency Company Limited and an advert on a hoarding for The Age newspaper. The grip man and conductor are standing on their respective platforms. During the attack on Polygon Wood Belgium on 20th September 1917 Pte Sandow displayed conspicuousu gallantry - He was an operator on Amplification and Power Buzzer Station in a chain of communication and in the enemy barrage he patrolled and repaired lines and earths utterly regardless of personal danger. While in the performance of his duty his leg was shot away. He however completed his task. It was largely due to this man's effort that good communication was maintained. Private Sandow died of wounds on 22 September 1917 and was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. Photo shows one of the horse trams and staff that operated the line that ran from Hawthorn Bridge via Burwood Road, Power Street, and Riversdale Road to Auburn Road, opening in 1890. There are 8 uniformed men and three officers in the photograph. In the background are many undeveloped housing blocks, and the Hawthorn Town Hall tower. The tramway operated until 1916 when it was replaced by an electric tram. Wimmera Falls Glenorchy. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. The fact that there was ever a natural waterfall in the Wimmer River would probably be a surprise to anyone who has known the river at all. There are many man-made weirs across it in several places today, one of them at Glenorchy is thought to hide the original falls. This postcard is part of an album of postcards which date from late 19th century to mid 20th century. It depicts a romanticized bush scene with two lines of A. B. Paterson poem, 'Black Swans', underneath. A. B. Paterson 1864-1941 was a famous Australian bush poet most notable for writing 'Waltzing Matilda' and 'The Man from Snowy River'. 'Black Swans' was first published in 1893. As this postcard is glued to the album, other information is unavailable, but this postcard is likely to have been printed in the late 19th or early 20th centuries.This postcard is in an album of postcards dating from the late 19th century to mid 20th century. “The lIrusaqi are monotheistic Void worshippers. The Void is an extremely complex concept, and seems to include multiple interpretations of the two great signs, the triangle and the circle. On one level the triangle symbolises Man, and on another, the whole material universe. The Void, symbolised by the circle, is both within and without Man and the material universe. So, we find many variations of the circle and triangle imagery permeating the whole of lrusaqi society, i.e. villages are laid out in pyramid form, with a circular well at the centre, towns are built on a series of triangles, intersected by highways and the Court of the Imperium itself is based on a central circle within a triangle, with delegates to the Court in the three corners, while the positions of the three Heads of State and the one Head Speaker, repeat the pattern. The Void itself is always portrayed as an expanding and contracting circle, (not unlike the aperture of a camera). This Robe is worn by the High Priest’s acolyte and spokesman. The Voidsayer interprets the prophesies and sayings of the Priest, in words readily understood by the common people. The disc on the back of the Robe is the Void, and the gold lines symbolise the words of the Priest, coming from the source of life. The Robe is covered in gold chain mail, a sign that the Robe-wearer will defend his master with his life, if necessary.” -Inga Hunter -

"Braemar" at 18 Suffolk Road, Surrey Hills - built c1894, demolished in1977 – and home of James Sneddon Snr. and family from 1890 until c1950. We believe it is James is at the gate and his family on the veranda. James was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire Scotland in 1833, as was his wife Jane. He died in March 1901 and she in March 1911. They are buried in Boroondara Cemetery (Pres B0522) with their daughter Jane (1864-1928). James Sneddon (Snr) was an important man in early Surrey Hills. He established real estate and ironmongery businesses in Union Road – first on the corner of Stirling Crescent and later over the road on the corner of Windsor Crescent. He was chairman of Surrey Hills’ MUIOOF (Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows). James Sneddon Jnr. followed his father in the family real estate business and was an even busier community man. He was a JP and had roles in the Surrey Hills ANA, the Progress Association and the Choral Society. He lived 2 doors from his father. The real estate business continued on the corner of Windsor Crescent and Union Road (north side) until the business was sold to the Doubleday (family) after WW2.The Sneddon family were early settlers and business owners in Surrey Hills and remained over 3 generations. Different family members held many roles in community organisations. This photo is also important in documenting built heritage that has been demolished.Image of a Victorian, weatherboard, block fronted, single storey house with decorative veranda, viewed from the front.
