Cordial was bought at the local grocery shop or supermarket in the bigger towns/cities. Glass bottles were used for cordial concentrate before plastic became more popular and cheaper. These bottles came in many shapes and sizes.Small clear glass bottle with rectangular base, straight sides two thirds of the way up and then tapering gradually to the opening. It has a metal goldish coloured lid. The label on the back gives directions for making cordial. North Kew, now divided between Kew and Kew East, bordered the Yarra River. As such, it was a region subject to flooding in the Yarra Valley. Development beyond this point (ie Kellett Grove) was limited by the City of Kew's planning regulations. Prior to urban development, the area since European settlement and the first land sales in the district in the 1840s, had been used for dairy farming. Hardy wrote numerous works of fiction and non-fiction in his lifetime. His most famous work is the 1950 novel, 'Power Without Glory'. A short story collection titled 'Legends from Benson's Valley, published in 1963 is loosely based upon his early lifetime memories of living in Bacchus Marsh during the 1930s. Hardy was was an active member of the Communist Party of Australia for most of his life. He tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to be elected to the Federal Parliament as a representative of the Communist party. Hardy died in North Carlton, Melbourne in 1994 aged 76. This work is a collection of critical essays about Hardy's work and life by several different writers and critics. Pte N T Simmons enlisted on 14 October 1915 and was taken on strength of 59 Battalion in April 1916. He was reported missing on 19 July 1916 and latter confirmed killed in action ar Fromelles. He was 21 years of age. Pte Simmons was born in Kyneton 1895.
