Book - JOSEPH BRADY COLLECTION: NOTEBOOK, BENDIGO WATER WORKS - CRUSOE RESERVOIR AND OTHER CONTRACTS 1870 TO 1874
Dark green covered book with gold edging front and back and seven horizontal lines on the spine. On front cover: buff sticker, with Bendigo Water Works, Crusoe Reservoir and others, contracts 1870 - 1874 written in cursive script. Later writing 'from Mrs. H. Strickland, Bungoona, Currie, King Island'. Written inside is: Presented to Bendigo Historical Society by Mrs A Strickland, Bungoona, Currie, King Island. Also the Historical Society Stamp. The next page has three newspaper cuttings. The first is 'The Victorian Waterworks'. It has costings for contracts for water supply, amounts which will supply water from the Coliban to the Castlemaine and Sandhurst districts, and if the Government should purchase the Bendigo Waterworks, and to construct the Upper Coliban reservoir, additional expenditure may be required. (from Daily Telegraph - 1868). The second is some information on The Yan Yean Aqueduct. The third is a letter to the Editor of the Argus from Joseph Brady, dated August 2, 1870, in reference to repairing the leak in the outlet tunnel of the Malmsbury Reservoir. He says the repair of the tunnel was not essential and is unnecessary and 2nd. If the bank was cut through and restored, for years the bank would not be safe, as the earth used in the restoration would require time to subside and unite with the old work. He hopes the embankment would be allowed to stand intact.civil engineering, water supply, coliban, bendigo water works - crusoe reservoir and other contracts 1870 to 1874, mrs a strictland, royal historical society of victoria bendigo branch, coliban scheme, upper coliban reservoir, daily telegraph 1868, yan yean aqueduct, age, argus 2/8/1870, malmsbury reservoir, joseph brady, charles cook, fishburn morton & kennedy, bernard ward & co, the fulton foundry co ltd, james mcewan & co, laylands foundry co, melbourne sewers & water supply, c w gore, crusoe office, john mcilwraith, edward chandler, ia-s miller & co, robison br & co, guthrie/white hills pottery, peter mcpherson, slater & co, john danks, mclean br & rigg, william beebe, t i connelly, i horwoods -

Ordsall, renamed Southesk in the 20th century was built for John Halfey in or before 1865. The house was rebuilt in the 1870s to designs by architect Michael Hennessy. In 1882 the house was redecorated by the firm of Culls Hill & Co., who hired the artists 'Mr Vandenbrandt' and 'Signor Rizzi" to paint the ceilings of the ballroom and the drawingroom. The artistic triumph was described in detail in The Argus, 30 October, 1882. In 1947, Southesk was purchased by the Kew City Council. For 23 years it was used as a meeting place for community groups. The house was then demolished in 1970 to make way for a new Town Hall. This is the earliest known photograph of Ordsall / South Esk, a significant mansion in Kew, built for John Halfey and now demolishedMembers of the Kew Congregational Church in front of one of the verandas of Southesk, circa 1900.congregational church - kew (vic), south esk - south esk - ordsall - kew (vic) -

The frescos, of which fragments survive, were some of the most important murals used as elements of interior decoration in Melbourne during the Boom Period of the 1880s. These photographs were taken immediately prior to the demolition of the house, and are the best examples of the murals.Notwithstanding its grand Italianate façade, the most important aspect of Southesk (formerly ‘Ordsall’) were the murals in the front two rooms. An article in the Melbourne Argus in 1882 records that Mr Vandenbrandt and Signor Rizzi created these under the supervision of Cullis Hill. This fresco from the ceiling of the ballroom depicts ‘Night, represented by a female figure in a diaphanous garment, skirted with flowers, wafted before the approaching dawn into space illuminated by the moonlight, and peopled by the fairies, is a striking picture. Flying with her are an attendant Cupid bearing an artificial light, and a tired little votary of Bacchus with a reversed wine-pitcher and goblet’.david carnegie, john halfey, southesk - cotham road - kew (vic), ordsall - cotham road - kew (vic) -

'Sunninghill' at 228 Cotham Road (Kew) is an historically significant building due to its associations with Joseph Thomas (Bland) Holt (1851-1942), theatre entrepreneur and actor who lived at the house following his retirement in 1909. Sunninghill (aka Sunning Hill) was one of his residences in Victoria (also 'The Anchorage' at Sorrento). Following Holt's death at Sunninghill on 28 June 1942, the house was left to his wife. After her death the house was bequeathed to Lucy Coppin, daughter of George Coppin. The 'Shakespeare Window' in the State Library of Victoria was at one stage installed in the house. These frescos were executed by artists hired by the firm of Cullis Hill & Co. While a number of photographs were taken of the interiors prior to the house's demolition in 1970, this small fragment of the fresco is one of only three extant. The fresco allows conservators to examine and evaluate fresco techniques of the period.A fragment of the painted domed ceiling of the drawingroom of Ordsall (later renamed Southesk) which once stood at the corner of Cotham Road and Charles Street, Kew. This rectangular fragment of painted plaster is a small section of the rectangular frieze of neo-gothic scenes that were a feature of the drawingroom ceiling. The fragment differs from those remaining from the ballroom in that it includes a section of gold leaf.Label: 'This is from "Southesk" drawing room'ordsall, southesk, cullis hill & co., halfey, john -

Photograph, Miss Jane Elizabeth (Jean) Pearson and her sisters in 1952, 1952
Miss Jane Elizabeth (Jean) Pearson is second from the left. From c1927 - c1950 Miss Pearson had the cake and confectionery shop at 147 Union Road. It was later a milk bar, next to Henry Jamieson’s radio and electrical shop. Miss Pearson sold Farey’s cakes which were very popular and in a trellised-off section also served morning and afternoon teas. Her sisters often helped. Silversticks, white knights, licorice straps were among a wide selection of sweets to be bought for 1d. – or even ½d. Jean was one of a large family born to John William Pearson and Agnes Yeaman. Jean was born at Riddell's Creek in c1884. She died in 1966. She had 3 brothers and a total of 6 sisters. Lillias Irene and Grace Stewart died in infancy or childhood, so the other sisters in the photo were (not necessarily in order): Ethel Agnes born in 1885, who married James Charles Robertson; Catherine Myra born in 1887, unmarried; May Dempster born 1891, unmarried; and Stella Christie born 1897, who married Cecil Hunt Aston in 1928. Jean was in business as a confectioner at 3 High Street, Malvern in 1927; in Union Road 1941-1949 and resided (presumably in retirement) at 37 Mayston Street, Hawthorn in 1954. At the later address May and Catherine are also listed variously in 1954 and 1963. (Ref: electoral rolls). The Hawthorn address was the 'family home' - address of John William Pearson who died in 1944, appointing Jean as his executrix.
