Bendigo Weekly from Friday, June 28, 2002 - Snippets of Bendigo history, the Pall Mall story, part two - by Edith Lunn. Close to the jeweller's shop, we came to Chancery Lane. Many early legal firms had their offices there. Among them were: Quick&Rymer, Luke Murphy&Don and Macoboy&Taylor. A branch of the Bendigo united Friendly Society's Dispensary opened on the corner. Other small business in the walk included a florist, men's hairdresser and a boot and shoes repairer. Moving on there was Betteridge's Agency for the Singer sewing machine company, Wilkinson's photographic studio, Sutton's music shop and Favaloro's cake shop and café the ''Savoy'' was opened in the 1920's. Whitelock and Carter had their men outfitters business in the building, Cocking's was a very popular drapery store. After Cocking's closed down, Stoneman's supermarket opened in the premises. Alongside there was a passageway that led upstairs to the office of Phillip Secher and Son, Accountants and the Bendigo jockey club. In the 1800's you could actually bathe in Bath Lane! Photo of the historic Bath Lane public swimming pool, on background the Flights pianos, organs building. Bath Lane is one of the most historic areas of Bendigo. It was so named because it was the site of a public swimming pool, known as 'the baths' which operated right up to the 1960's. In 1913, when the 'Municipal Baths' were built in Barnard Street, the baths in Bath Lane became exclusively 'ladies baths'. The clip is in a folder.newspaper, bendigo

In the journey up View Street we come now to the former Masonic Hall and Temple, our present day Performing Arts Centre. As a freemason, architect W. C. Bendigo Weekly date unknown. '' Snippets of Bendigo history'' by Edith Lunn the View Street story continued. In this article Edith Lunn describes Dudley House, originally the survey office and the oldest permanent government building in Bendigo. From 1854 surveyor Richard Larritt worked there. It was in 1890 that the name Dudley house was attached to the building. Town clerks W. Honeybone and H.C. Inleton lived there. Later it was the home of Dr. Peter Slater, after he moved out city engineer Mr. Rex Anderson moved in. After his death the Bendigo branch of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria established its home there after 25 years Dudley House reverted to the Council. Newspaper article from Friday, September 11, 1998. '' As it was, and as it will be.'' After having been hidden for almost forty years, the original Bendigo Art Gallery building has been reclaimed. A victim of the modernisation of the 1960's the building has been covered by a cream brick structure until last week. Four photos accompanied the article showing the before and after. Bendigo Weekly from Friday, September 8, 2000. Article by James Lerk ''Discover Bendigo, Bendigo Arcade's fiery farewell''. This well known Bendigo landmark was lost through attrition and fire. At 10.30 pm on October 3, 1974, smoke was seen coming from the arcade building. Miss O'Shannessy, the owner of the baby wear shop had switched on a heater that accidentally ignited some of the shop's contents. Typed copy of what appears to be a speech. Mentioned is that after 1910 the Commonwealth took over the minting it's own money. Gold mining was chosen for the one pound note and a Bendigo scene was chosen. The scene chosen shows boring operations in the Victoria Quartz Mine. The picture was taken by Vincent Kelly of the five figures but for engraving only three were shown. They were Mr W Healy, Mr J Smith and Mr James Beverage. James Beverage was a member of Bendigo's first fire brigade. He went to Beechworth for a demonstration and on the way home stopped at Christie's Hotel in Swanston Street. There was a fire at the hotel and Mr Beverage rescued Mrs Christie, her baby and a servant. At a later date Mr Beverage saved a woman from a burning building in Moore Street in Bendigo. He received the Royal Humane Society's Medal which is now housed at the Bendigo Fire Station in Hargreaves Street. In the City's formative years the area that deposited its rain water into the Long Gully Creek was considered to be in Long Gully and for many years the Victoria Quartz Mine deposited many thousands of gallons of water into the Long Gully Creek. The article is an estate agent, Craig Tweed & Co Pty Ltd, ad about a house called Kilhallen which had been in the Truscott family for four generations. The house and the building materials are described. A photo shows the back of the two story house with a small room added on at the back. On the back of the page titled Bendigo properties is a photo of a two story house with ironlace on the verandas, a tree partly obscuring the house and a single story weatherboard building beside it. An auction sale sign is on the front fence. The second photo shows an ornate fireplace with tall carving above it. Written at the top of the page is: A Truscott.
