"On 5 July 1936, locals in Melton South saw a plane emerge from behind clouds above the railway station, in heavy wind and rain. Engine roaring, the plane went into a spin and disintegrated into pieces in mid-air, before crashing to the ground near Arnold’s Creek. The pilot, young Australian aviator Jimmy Melrose, and a passenger, Alexander Campbell, were killed.Jimmy Melrose was a popular figure in international aviation, having been the youngest and only solo pilot to finish the London to Melbourne Centenary Air Race in 1934. His death, at the age of just twenty-two, caused an outpouring of sorrow. He was honoured with a state funeral two days later at St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne, which was attended by thousands of people. Locals Maisie Arthur, Ted Wickham and Bill Cahill gave eyewitness accounts of the accident to the authorities, and an inquest found that it was the result of structural failure and poor weather. This hand tool would have been used either in the home for making small items of furniture or small building projects or it could have been used by a tradesman working on small jobs in the building industry – window sills, doors, cupboards etc. Planes are still used today to whittle down wood. This tool has no known local provenance but it is a good example of hand tools of the past and will be useful for display. This is a metal plane used for shaving wood. It has a rectangular base curved at the ends and the end of a steel blade is visible near one end of the base. The handle is dome-shaped and attached to the handle by a screw is a ridged metal wheel that rests on the blade which has been inserted on an angle. This wheel can be turned to adjust the blade, keep it in place or remove it for replacement. Jack was one of the foundation members of the Australian Survey Corps. This plane tool is believed to have belonged to a Warrnambool carpenter, Henry Phillips. English-born Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849 and lived for some time in Port Fairy. In 1865 he formed a partnership in Warrnambool with Christopher Beattie and established the undertaking business of Beattie and Phillips. This business continued on after the deaths of the founding partners, Beattie and Phillips and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics’ Institute.This tool is of interest, firstly as an example of a 19th century carpenter’s tool and secondly as a memento of the 19th century Warrnambool businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a wooden plane tool with a boat-shaped body curved at the sides and a wooden piece inserted in a top opening. This wooden piece holds a metal blade which protrudes at a slit opening in the base of the body. This is a unique example of a hand drawn plane table sheet produced in the first year of the Australian Survey Corps by original members of the Corps. Of interest is the documented times that it took to create the original field sheet. Also of interest is the fact that this field sheet that was used to create the actual SYDNEY map sheet was contoured, many map sheets produced up until now were purely planimetric and lacked contouring that was needed for military use. A moulding plane is a specialised plane used for making the complex shapes found in wooden mouldings that are used to decorate furniture or other wooden object. Traditionally, moulding planes were blocks of wear resistant hardwood, often beech or maple, which were worked to the shape of the intended moulding. The blade, or iron was likewise formed to the intended moulding profile and secured in the body of the plane with a wooden wedge. A traditional cabinetmakers shop might have many, perhaps hundreds, of moulding planes for the full range of work to be performed. Large crown mouldings required planes of six or more inches in width, which demanded great strength to push and often had additional peg handles on the sides, allowing the craftsman's apprentice or other worker to pull the plane ahead of the master who guided it. All we known about Richard Routledge is that he was a tool maker and retailer that operated a business at either 23 or 64 Bull St Birmingham between 1869 to sometime in the early 20th century. There are many of his tools including decorative moulding planes of all sizes and designs for sale around the world and that his tools in particular moulding planes are well sought after by collectors of vintage tools. A vintage tool made by an early tool manufacturer Richard Routledge, this item was made commercially for firms and individuals that worked in wood and needed a tool that could produce an ornamental finish to timber. The tool was used before routers and spindle moulders came into use after World War ll, a time when to produce a decorative moulding for a piece of furniture, door trims etc. or other items had to be accomplished using hand tools and in particular one of these types of planes. These profiled planes came in various shapes and sizes to achieve a decorative finish. A significant tool from the mid to late 19th century by a known maker that today is quite rare and sought after by collectors. It gives us a snapshot of how furniture and other decorative finishes were created on timber by the use of hand tools. Tools that were themselves handmade shows the craftsmanship used during this time not only to make a tool such as the subject item but also the craftsmanship needed to produce a decorative finish that was needed to be made for any timber item. This wood plane would have been used in the past both in industry and in the home. It is an early example of a plane and has antiquarian interest. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as a good example of a vintage tool used in the past by carpenters and handymen. This is a metal tool for planing wood. It has a rectangular wooden base and two side bars for adjusting the length and angle of the blade. The tool has several metal wing nuts and screws and a wooden handle. The plane table instrument was a simple but very effective early method of producing maps. Some very early editions were produced by the Australian Survey Corps after its formation in 1915 using this method. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. Microscope company Olympus was founded by Takeshi Yamashita in Japan in 1919. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history. A spokeshave is a very short plane, oriented horizontally, with a handle on each side. It is a general purpose tool for circular work when working with timber or leather. Commonly used by painters, wheelwrights and saddlers. This exhibit features an iron cutter clamped between two wooden handles, one of which can be unscrewed to enable it to work in cramped spaces. Alexander Mathieson & Sons Ltd ('& Sons', after c. 1890), of the Saracen Tool Works, Glasgow, advertised as 'manufacturers of planes, mechanical, engineering and edge-tools'. They received 'prize medals' at the London, Melbourne and Edinburgh International Exhibitions of 1851, 1862, 1880 and 1886, in their 'quest for perfection in tools'. Mathieson's vast output included specialised craft implements for coopers, ship's carpenters, tinsmiths and wheelwrights. The firm originated when master plane-maker John Manners opened premises in Saracen Lane, Glasgow, in 1792. 4 Alexander Mathieson (c. 1797–1852) took over his business in 1821, which he gave as the foundation date of his firm. He was later succeeded by his son, Thomas A. Mathieson (1822–1899), a prominent Glasgow magistrate and preceptor of Hutcheson's Hospital charitable institution. In 1854, Mathiesons moved to East Campbell Street, and had opened branches in Edinburgh, Dundee and Liverpool by 1876. The third generation comprised Thomas O. and James H. Mathieson (born 1867), the latter being a Glasgow bailie (councillor), whose estate totalled an enormous £150,939 in 1926. Mathieson's hand- and small machine-tools (e.g. bandsaws and beading machines) were exported worldwide, especially their 'heavy duty auger bits used... for boring railway sleepers'.
