Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. Sitting on a prime piece of real estate, over time there have been discussions on the best use of the site. Whilst there is no longer any suggestion of selling the site, it's ongoing development is still being discussed. Serious consideration was given to selling the St. Kilda Rd property to developers and changing sites. No indication is given for the rejection of this proposal, possibly in Board minutes of the time. This provides an insight into the pressures in the 1970s to sell the current site. A black foolscrap folder containing typed minutes of meetings of the Investigation Committee which was set up to investigate proposals which had been suggested regarding a future land policy. The meetings were held between 1970 and 1973. This is the report prepared by the Royal Society of Victoria regarding the ill fated expedition of the explorers Robert Burke and William Wills in 1861. This volume appears to be Chief Justice Stawell's, the president of the Royal Society, personal copy.The report is rare, held by both the University of Melbourne and the State Library, as well as a few other libraries.Red leather bound report of the Exploration Committee (Burke & Wills Expedition). The hotel was an important social hub which burnt down in 1965. In order to rebuild a committee was co ordinated with the intention of re-building the hotel and running it as a co-operative. Significant as this document records the plan to rebuild the hotel, including costings. Ultimately the plan did not proceed but provides an insight into the value of the hotel perceived by the town. People involved include the vendor of the land, D.W.G. (Des) Moore; and committee members who probably included Tom Austin, Des Moore, Wokka Moore, possibly Rod Calvert.
