Vision AustraliaText, RVIB Yarrawonga Auxiliary, 1932 - [2001?]
This collection of the Yarrawonga Auxiliary contains correspondence to and from RVIB head office ranging between 1941 - 1998. Included is a 'Special Sugar Permit' allocated on 17/6/1947 to the Auxiliary including letter. Over the years the Auxiliary raised funds through 'Time and Talent' competitions, subscriptions, stalls, film nights, afternoon teas, The RVIB Lighthouse appeal via door knock and the sale of flowers. Williamstown Botanic Gardens- Hobsons Bay City CouncilPhotographs - Williamstown Botanic Gardens, 1936
Ernest Anderson (head gardener) and Harry (gardener) worked at Williamstown Botanic Gardens. The Anderson family lived in the curators lodge on the grounds in the 1930s. Horses were used at the gardens until the 1960s when the council bought a truck. Mr Biggs drove as Mr Anderson did not have a licence. He rode his bike to the Town Hall every Friday to put in the time sheets. The collection is the only known photos of the Gardens working horses and demonstrates Edwardian Municipal gardening techniques that continued into the 1960s. They are photographic evidence of the planting styles, species choices and structures. Details inscribed on the reverse of some of the photos confirm names of staff at this time. Photo 13 (m) m: Only known photo of Ernest Anderson to be held by the Gardens2013.001.a-l is a collection of 12 small format photographs from the Anderson family album dated from 1917-1936 plus one large image of donor's wedding c1953. This wedding dress was made & worn by Marjorie Gertrude Schneider, elder daughter of Mr & Mrs A. A. Schneider, of Lorquon, married Harold Francis Rohde, youngest son of Mr & Mrs J. B. Rohde, of Gerang, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Woorak, March 2nd, 1949.The dress was handmade by the bride, Marjorie Schneider.A charming frock of ivory cloque, inset with a yoke of beige lace with scalloped edges, cut on very flattering lines. The bodice, fitting perfectly to the waist and the back having a row of buttons, was ornamented as the shoulder with a diamante clip which had adorned her mother's wedding gown. The full skirt was draped softly from the waist, & extended into a long train at the back. The halo of orange blossom, which held the veil in place, set off to perfection the exquisite bride. Photograph captioned 'Golden Square Fire Brigade Dahlia Float at Easter Fair', is one of nine sepia mounted photographs pertaining to early 20th century Bendigo donated to BHS by the Essendon Op Shop. Uncle Son caption and tick possibly relates to W G Dahl. Float mounted upon a hand drawn fire brigade hose & reel cart has two uniformed Fire-men standing beside the cart, along with three kneeling men wearing ties, vests and suits. Float covered in dahlia flowers has sign reading 'Erected by the Committee of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition Melb 1901-2 in Commemoration of the Discovery of Gold in Bendigo'. Moulded images in white featuring a kneeling boy panning for gold beside a standing young girl in long dress are prominently displayed upon the top portion of the flower covered float. The float stands in Charring Cross in front of the now demolished Horse Bazaar once located between the Lyric Theatre and the City Family Hotel. Ornate brickwork of the building follows the roof-line either side of embossed 'Established 1853'. Two matching arches are featured on front of building. Horse Bazar is embossed in large capital letters above main entrance arch, with Nicholls & Hill above the other. Embossed letters below read succeeded to L Macpherson & Co & F Hill. A small arched window within walled arch matches entrance arch. A notice board mounted on building front reads, Office of the Australian Alliance Assurance Company , Fire Life Guaranteed. P. Simpson, son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Simpson, of Mornington. A group of her fellow workers decorated the chapel with lovely pink and white gladioli, carnations and roses. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Weller, chaplain of the Mission, and the bride was given away by her father, Mr A. W. Walker, of Manning road, East Malvern. She wore a lovely ivory georgette frock, the finely tucked skirt being fashioned with a deep transparent hem of Chantilly lace. Over it fell a beautiful Honiton lace veil mounted on tulle and arranged to give the ef fect of a train. Fragrant white roses composed her bouquet. Two attendants followed her down the aisle — her sister, Miss Molly Walker, and Miss Ella Kendall — both wearing dainty shrimp pink georgette frocks and large crinoline straw hats in the same shade with a dainty edging of tulle. They carried bouquets of pink cactus dahlias nnd delphiniums. Mr Louis Buscombe was best man, and Mr George Thompson grooms man. Amy Dora Walker (known as Dora) of East Malvern married Harold Priestley Simpson of Surrey Hills on 14 February 1928. The bride's maids were Ella Kendall and Molly Walker. This photograph shows one of the many weddings held at the Mission to Seafarers over the years and provides an overview of wedding fashion of the late 1920s. The Bride is posing in the courtyard of the Mission to Seamen. The bridesmaids were Ella Kendall and Molly Walker. The Walkers and Dora had a long association with the Mission and the LHLG and in the 1960s becoming president of the Flying Angel League which amalgamated with the LHLG in the early 1960s. In 1970 Dora received an OBE. Private images of the day for the record were supplied to the Mission by sons David and Brian in 2018. The Marriage Register lists Harold Priestley Simpson and Amy Dora Walker as the bride and groom, and the wedding date as 14th of February 1928. The photograph uses the personal Harry and Dora, instead of the formal Harold and Amy. In the Register, Amy started signing her name as Dora. before correcting it. The photograph shows that weddings took place at the Chapel during the late 1920's, and the style of weddings at the time. This includes the type of outfits worn, such as the length of the veil and the type of bouquet carried. Dora's Bridesmaids are depicted in 2 other images in the MTSV collection also an image of the chapel decked with flowers for the occasion. The Anglican church has been used for weddings since being finished in 1917. The Marriage Register shows that these weddings were legal in the Commonwealth of Australia, and lists Church of England as the denomination for this wedding. Miss Amy Dora Simpson (nee Walker) had a long association with the Mission, first as a young Volunteer with the Ladies Harbour Light Guild circa WW1, and through to her wedding in early 1928 and beyond. Death notice and tributes - Ringwood Mail, January 30, 1941.The residents of Ringwood and district were shocked when the news came through of the tragic and sudden death of Fireman Jack Wilkins of Warrandyte Road Ringwood, while working on a fire at the Cooper Case Company's mill in White Horse road, Ringwood, during the early hours of Sunday morning. He was found by his comrades in a state of collapse after winding up the hose, and died almost immediately ... Fireman Wilkins joined up with the Ringwood Fire Brigade at its inception in March, 1926, as part time fireman, and has been with the brigade ever since ... A carpenter and builder by trade, he has built many homes in the Ringwood district. One of his hobbies was his garden. He was an expert grower of dahlias, and exhibited successfully in many shows. He was a member of the M.U.I.O.O.F., and was keenly interested in sport. He played cricket right up to last year with the Ringwood Cricket Club, and captained the C Grade team for years ... He was also keenly interested in football, and for a number of years officiated as goal umpire in the Ringwood District Football League. He is survived by a wife and six children. Tributes include Jay (Jack), dearly loved husband of Alice Marion, loving father of Walter (A.I.F.), Allan, Winnie, Ronald (deceased), Margaret, William and Edward ...
