This was the second honour board created by Ballarat College to honour the school captain for each year. The first award was given in 1914. Prior to the time the captain of the football first was recognised as captain of the school. At amalgamation (1974) and because the Senior students moved to the Mair Street campus) this board was co-opted to honour Junior School captains. In 2012 the school undertook a major project and created three new boards. One board honours Ballarat College Dux (1868 - 1973) and School Captains (1914 - 1973); another board honours Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies' College Dux and Head Prefect (1919 - 1973). These boards resemble the 1950 re-creation. A third board was instituted in 2012 to honour Ballarat Clarendon College Dux and School Captains (1974 - ) This board emphasizes the value placed on leadership by the school from its earliest beginnings. That the boards have been maintained and consistently displayed in significant places of honour within the school only further emphasizes the historial and social significance of the award 'school captain'. Book prize awarded to J J Chalmers for excellence in English, Geography and History. Awarded during R O McCoy's principalship 1864 - 1874. J Chalmers was Dux of College in 1870 but this prize was awarded in 1871 suggesting that he completed an extra year while awaiting university entrance. Social significance being one example of the prizes provided by R O McCoy as his own gift. From 1969 these prizes were obtained through special order in London and were uniformly bound in full calf with the College seal and motto embossed on the cover. This book was awarded to John Geddes McGowan in 1891 for first prize in Latin. John entered the college in January of 1891 at the age of 13. He was the dux of Ballarat College in 1892. It is noted in the original register that John's parent is John S McGowan and the residence as 11 Ebden(?) Street, Ballarat East.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover.
