This book belonged to Agnes Swinton (b.1900). She was the daughter of John and Charlotte Swinton of Warrnambool. Her father, John, was the fifth son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and established a store in Timor Street. The Swinton family still operates a commercial business in the same street and the name ‘Swinton’ is well-known in Warrnambool. Agnes’ sister, Doris had a distinguished military career in World War Two and was a long-term Matron of the Warrnambool Hospital. This book is of considerable interest as it belonged to a member of the Swinton family which has been connected with Warrnambool’s history since the 1850s. This is a leather-covered book of 216 pages, plus a Supplement of 12 pages. The text is printed in two columns to a page. The front cover has gold lettering printed into the leather. The Presbyterian congregation began in 1854. The first St Andrews church was built in Myers Street in 1859 but this was demolished and the current stuccoed brick building was built in 1930. This note book records the collection and the names of the collectors from the services held at the Church of England in the small town of Mepunga, east of Warrnambool. The services were held fortnightly or monthly. The dates are 1915 to 1918 and 1926 to 1935. The latter date may be when the church was closed.This note book is of considerable interest , particularly because of the entry names of Mepunga residents in the early part of the 20th century. Of special interest is the signature of "T.P. Bennett", Archdeacon Bennett, the fifth Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool, 1912 to 1937. He is especially remembered as a respected and loved Padre in World War 1. A Marker Flag he brought back from the Great War is displayed in Christ Church bell tower.This is a note book with a black cover and pages ruled with red lines. Most of the pages are blank. The Gipps Street Wesleyan Methodist Church of 1874 and the adjoining school hall, were built in the Collingwood Flat area - one of the municipality's poorest areas. In 1903, the Collingwood Methodist Mission was established with its headquarters in the Gipps Street Church. Six Methodist Missions were created in inner Melbourne. Three churches were operated by the Collingwood Mission. They were: Sackville Street Collingwood, Elizabeth Street, North Richmond (demolished), and Gipps Street Collingwood (demolished). The Mission operated until approximately 1930. The Wesleyan Church and School in Sackville St. Collingwood was built in 1886 and used as a church for 65 years. It was also part of the Collingwood Methodist Mission before being converted to an industrial/commercial complex. The Baptist Church was built in 1881 in Tucker Road, in 1916 on land donated by Henry Box, a local market gardener. The wooden Church was moved to the to Vickery Street Bentleigh, the current site of the Bentleigh Baptist Church .
