Sydney Joy (joy) Stewart (1925-2018) was a founding member of the Kew Historical Society, and during the 1970s its secretary. During her residence in Kew, she completed numerous property illustrations on commission. These ranged from preliminary sketches, including architectural details to finished pen & ink and wash illustrations on paper. On moving to Queensland, Joy Stewart donated the remaining property illustrations in her possession to the Kew Historical Society. In 1987-88, she fulfilled a commission by the Society of designs for a series of embroideries completed by residents during the Australian Bicentennial commemorations.Sydney Joy (Joy) Stewart was born in Melbourne 1925. She studied at Swinburne Technical College Art School from 1941-1945, then the National Gallery Art School 1946-1948. Her career included employment positions as a display artist, designer/painter, gallery assistant, and art teacher. Joy relocated to Cairns in 1981. Solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Cairns, including 'Done By Me' at Cairns Regional Gallery in 1999. Group exhibitions at Cairns Regional Gallery, 'The Fish John West Regrets, 1993' and 'Facets of Life' 1994. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. A slide image of three ladies in a waiting room, believed to be in the old Legacy House in Market Street, probably from the 1950s. The portrait of Stan Savige was painted by E. Buckmaster for the Archibald prize in 1946. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meetings, activities and the girls classes on the second floor of the building, accessed by this staircase, but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. The mostly 'mint' postcards were purchased in Victoria and while travelling overseas. The sole dated postcard is dated from 1929. The postcards are numbered sequentially from 2017.0058.01-39. Photos of a garden party or event at Government House hosted by the Governor of Victoria. It was stored with photos from the 50th Anniversary year events or perhaps it is when Sir Rohan Delacombe was leaving the post of Governor of Victoria (1974). There were a significant number of events attended by Sir Delacombe during the Jubilee Year as he is patron of Legacy. Another copy of the photo 00464.7 had notes on the back saying three Legatees talking to the Governor -they were George Cowan, Geoff Handbury and Bill Michan (?). Photos show him making a speech, also a piper playing from the tower, also Lady Delacombe with the President's wife, Helen Handbury. An exhibition, mounted by the Kew Historical Society, featuring a number of photographs and objects exploring the historical roles of the asylum in our culture, focusing on the Yarra Bend Asylum, the Kew Lunatic Asylum (later Willsmere Hospital) and the Kew Children’s Cottages. Photographs of the opening night of the exhibition on asylums by the Yarra, organised as part of the Kew Festival 2017. Institutions featured were: Yarra Bend Asylum, Kew Lunatic Asylum, and the Children's Cottages Kew. The exhibition was opened by Astrid Judge.
