... K class locomotives... and transport. Railways Wodonga Fred Rochow K class locomotives ...The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. George Padgett was born into a railway family in Numurkah, Victoria on 3 February 1890. He began working for the Victorian Railways as a junior clerk in Maryborough and gained his Driver’s ticket in 1913 at North Melbourne. In November 1937 when the “Spirit of Progress” made its first run from Melbourne to Albury, he was moved to Wodonga. From the train's first return trip he took over the driving. During his career, he made an average of 92 round trips a year. George made his last trip on 4 February 1955 prior to his retirement. George died in Wodonga on 19 February 1967. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.A group of men gathered at a retirement function for George Padgett in 1955. K Class Locomotives - One of VR's most successful classes of loco they were built over a 24 year period. A general purpose, light lines loco the K class had a very long career in all sorts of service from branch line passenger and goods work to pilot and banker duties and roadside mainline service. The K class is credited with working virtually every line in the VR system and hauling almost every kind of train. The majority of the class lasted into the 60's. K153 entered service on 9 September 1940, initially allocated to the Benalla locomotive Depot It is now owned by VicTrack and managed by Steamrail Victoria. When in Melbourne, it is regularly used on suburban shuttles and on day tours to Geelong and similar-length trips. At various stages it has been withdrawn from service for preservation work. Throughout its preservation career (starting from 1974), the engine has been painted all-over black with some details picked out in white or yellow (such as handrails and the staff exchanger horn, welded in the raised position) to meet modern safety standards. It most recently returned to service in 2003.railways wodonga, fred rochow, wodonga railwaymen, george sandford, locomotive k153 -

From the article with the photograph; The terminus was located at the intersection of High St, Burke, Kilby and Doncaster Roads. We are at the outer edges of Melbourne’s suburbia at the time, unlike the current tram terminus of today. Burke Road, north of Doncaster Road is clearly under construction in preparation for the new river crossing. The vacant block of land in the foreground will remain so for another ten years or so. In 1960 the new Dickens Supermarket was built on this site and the intersection became known locally as Dickens Corner. The narrow track on the left hand side of the photo is Doncaster Road. The tram at the terminus is a straight-sill single trucker of one of the G, K, Q or R classes. It is finished in the late MMTB chocolate and cream livery. A cable grip car body has been placed as a tram shelter at the terminus. The church was subsequently relocated to Francis Street Yarraville where it still stands today as a private residence. Geological specimen - Amazonite, unknown
Amazonite is classed as a Tectosilicate and is part of the Feldspar group of minerals. Amazonite forms in a triclinic crystal structure and its chemical formula is K(AlSi3O8). In appearance, Amazonite can range from shades of green to green blue to blue, and often with white streaks or veining. The greenish colour is believed to come from the small amount of lead contained in its composition. Amazonite is named after the Amazon River due to its colour and similarities to another rock found along the riverbanks, although Amazonite is not actually found at or near the Amazon. Although less commonly used in jewellery today, Amazonite has been mined and used by humans for thousands of years and Amazonite jewellery from at least 2000BCE have been discovered in North Africa. Amazonite is found in many locations around the world including Brazil, Peru, Ethiopia, Canada, Russia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Pakistan, China, Madagascar, and the United States of America. This specimen most probably comes from the U.S.A., Amazonite is found in several US states particularly in Colorado, Virginia, Pennsylvania. This specimen is of both scientific and historic significance as a striking blue green example of Amazonite mined prior to 1868 in the United States of America, most likely from Colorado, Virginia, or Pennsylvania. These three states are all locations of significant Amazonite deposits. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Many of these specimens were sent to research and collecting organisations across Australia, including the Burke Museum, to educate and encourage further study.A palm-sized Feldspar mineral specimen from the Tectosilicate class in shades of blue-green with white veining.Existing label: green/blue Feldspar / "amazonite" / possibly USA geological specimen, geology, geology collection, burke museum, beechworth, tectosilicate, amazonite, feldspar, triclinic crystal structure, amazonite usa, amazonite colorado, amazonite virginia, amazonite pennsylvania -

VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. A petition from Intake 18 students of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management was sent to Mr Bob Goodbourn - Course Coordinator of VIOSH, Prof D W James - Vice-Chancellor of University of Ballarat, Prof G Anderson - Head of School, Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences, Mr P Martin - Senior Lecturer, School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences, Ms K Whytcross and Mr P Johnson - Student Representatives. The students request that Mr Peter Martin present the lectures for MG473 Statistics and Modelling in Semester 2, 1995. He has lectured the students in MG472 Statistics and Modelling during the first semester and his method teaching to a class with a majority of adults students has been excellent - clear, well paced and caring manner. His adult teaching skills provided students with confidence and encourage discussion in class. List of students and signatures were provided. Hand written note from Gerry Anderson to Bob Goodbourn stated that they do their best to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee anything. In general it is inappropriate to make decisions based on student interests. Students and their positive comments are appreciated. Bob Goodbourn was asked to pass the comments onto the students concerned.Three A4 pages - third mainly handwritten in pen.
