In the course of celebrating the Ballarat School of Mines centenary in 1970, the School Coundil launched a building appeal for the erection of a Great Hall at tehe then new Mount Helen campus of its tertiary division. In 1976 the tertiation division of the School of Mines was, by government decision, merger with another tertiary institution in Ballarat to vreate the Ballarat College of Advanced Education while the remainder of the School of Mines continued to be based at Lydiard Street serving the needs of Technical and Further Education. The 1870s Founders Hall, erected from the proceeds of the Centenary Appeal for a sum of approximately $800,000, commemorats the intiative of the founders of the original School of Mines and its "descendants", including Ballarat C.A.E., as well as formal technical education in Australia. The hall accomodates approximately 670 people in theatre type seating and was intended for multiple purpose use by community groups as well as by the College. Construction of the Hall commenced in 1878. It was opened approximately 110 years after the opening of the Balalrat School of Mines, and 10 years after the opening of the Mount Helen campus. The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. This card is an invitation to attend the opening ceremonies with the dedication of memorial chapel on the 6th of September 1917 by the Archbishop, and the official opening of the Flinders Street Mission on the 11th of September 1917 by the Governor, Sir, Arthur Lyulph Stanley.This 1917 invitation marks the commencement of official ceremonies to dedicate both the new Mission Building and Chapel and associated services and celebratory concert. Prior to 1939 access to the Island was by punt from San Remo or car ferry from Stony Point. A bridge was opened in 1940 but increased traffic and low load capacity was a problem. The decision to build a new bridge was made in the 1960s.HistoricalColoured, bound booklet with a photo of the old and new Phillip Island bridges on the cover and the CRB logo and name on rear.
