This photo was taking during construction of the tailrace tunnel between West Kiewa Power Station and Mt. Beauty. Much of the area was unstable and timber supports were erected prior to concreting. The tunnel was commenced in 1941 and completed in 1952. It brings water from the power station into the open tailrace at Mt. Yields information about the status of the SEC's Ballarat B power station in 1962.An article on page 8 of The Courier Newspaper, 12 pages, for Monday April 23, 1962. Note the year, shown as 1961 on the front page and the editorial on page 3 is incorrect, the correct year is 1962 as shown on the other pages - see Reg Item 5909 for other items within the paper. Page 8 of the newspaper contains a photo and text about the SEC's Ballarat B power station, titled "A White Elephant?" and its usefulness giving other generators being brought on line. The Junction Dam and Clover Dam Power Station, stages of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, were needed to meet the increased power demands of the wartime industry in Victoria. Clover added 26 megawatts to the grid. Junction Dam was completed and ready to hold water by September 1943, but was emptied in December 1943 and not filled again until May 1944. Construction of Clover Power Station commenced in July 1941 and both turbines were in service by May 1945.Clover Power Station and Junction Dam were part of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme constructed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. SECV official photographers took photographs of most stages of construction of the Hydro Electric Scheme and referenced each photo with a number and dating system as an historical record and for reference for other projects.
