Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A circular from the Management Committee informing licensees and lease holder or the introduction of rates has become necessary. It explains the need to raise revenue via rates in order for the Committee to repay loans acquired to make improvements to the Village area. This shop, in Main Street Rutherglen, near Poachers Paradise pub (originally the Rutherglen Hotel), was owned and operated as a barber shop by Jack O'Keefe. This photograph was taken in 1986. The couple in front of the building are probably Jack O'Keeffe and his wife. This is a collection of sixteen tourist guides dating from the mid 1970's to 2013. These contain listings of businesses, accommodation, eateries and events in Warrnambool and district. They also include maps of Warrnambool and surrounds, advertising and photographs of various attractions. While mainly covering Warrnambool a small number of the guides cover the South West Region. Tourist brochures have been produced in Warrnambool since the 1890s and this one has been published by the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Some of the photographs for this brochure come from the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and the information on the car tours was provided by the Warrnambool Tourist Information Centre. Tourism in the Warrnambool region has always been of major importance to the town/city and a local Chamber of Commerce or Tourists’ Association has been active in the area for over 100 years. Today the official tourist guides are produced by the Warrnambool City Council. This brochure is a good example of local tourism promotion in the 1970s and will also be useful for display. This is a small booklet (1975) containing 39 pages. It has local Warrnambool advertisements, maps, photographs, printed material and details of 9 tours that tourists could take by car around Warrnambool. The pages are stapled. The front cover has a blue-tinged image of a surf boat patrol and the back cover has a black and white photograph of Warrnambool’s beach.
