Ephemera - Weekly Tickets - rail and bus St Kilda Bus lines - set of 7, Victorian Railways (VR), 1960s
Following the complete closure of the St Kilda - Brighton Electric street railway (tramway) in 1959, the Brighton St Kilda Bus lines operated a service under a contract with the Victorian Railways with a joint ticketting arrangement. These tickets are weekly tickets for various locations along the former tramway. Those tickets available for Melbourne have the conditions of travel on the rear. The two vertical stripes indicated that the ticket was available to pass through the gates at Flinders St or Spencer St, while the large cross indicated to a ticket checker that the ticket was not available beyond St Kilda station or to pass through a set of gates. All printed on a off white card. The Victorian Railways continued to operate a bus service along the former Black Rock - Sandringham line, long after the tram line closed. The Brighton - St Kilda Bus lines could issue tickets, as an agent, from St Kilda Railway Station to Melbourne on behalf of the Victorian Railways. These dated tickets represent a sample of these. A group of tickets would be issued to each driver for the day who would issue them in order from his ticket tray or kit. Ticket - set of four paste board or cardboard - Zone 1 and 2, Travel cards for use from Watsonia and Greensborough Railway Stations. Have been dated stamped for periods during Oct. 1981 and Feb. 1983. Travelcard Note the ticket numbers - two from the Railway Printer and two from the Government printer. It allowed unlimited, all day travel on trains, trams and buses - both Government and Private. Ticket issued by the Victorian Railways that allowed the passenger to do a round trip from Brighton Beach to St Kilda via the Electric Street railway or tramway and then return using a train via Flinders St station. Photos show W class 304 after delivery from Adelaide being unloaded by the travelling yard crane. The tram was built in Adelaide by the Holden Bodyworks and completed at the Workshops. The tram entered service on 14-8-1924. It was converted to a W2 class tram in Dec. 1932. The second photo shows the tram being loaded onto a horse-drawn jinker. Photo shows a large bridge beam being unloaded at the Flinders St / Spencer St yard by an overhead crane. The beam is marked "Kelly and Lewis". Kelly & Lewis in the 1920s were making bridge beams for the Victorian Railways at their Springvale workshops. Though this photo does not appear in the PROV railway photograph collection, possibly one of the beams for the Spencer St - Clarendon St bridge that was built in 1929 . There are a number of photos of similar bridge beams for the Spencer St bridge constructed in 1929 by the Victorian Railways in the State Library.
