The view is looking southeast from near Eltham Road (present-day Sherbourne Road) across Bolton and Bridge streets towards the village of Little Eltham running down the main road (Maria Street) . On the immediate right is Mrs Mary Jane Smart's family home located on the north side of Bridge Street at the intersection with Bolton Street, facing Bolton Street (now part of present day Brisbane Street and occupied by the Kitchen Design Centre). An original early settler's cottage, it was built by Mary Jane Smart's parents, Edwin Bailey and Jane (nee Matthews). Mary Jane Smart was born in the cottage. She married an Englishman, Alexander Wilson Smart who disappeared to Western Australia in the early 1900s in search of gold. He ultimately married again in W.A., committing bigamy and then committed murder and was hung in 1911. Wesleyans at Magpie collected money to built a tent chapel at Magpie, but the rush had moved on before it was erected so the tent was taken to Ballarat where it becme the basis of the Lydiard Street Wesleyan Church (now Uniting Church). A bluestone church was later bulit above the Magpie School which was demolished in the 1960s with the stone used in the entrance building at Sovereign Hill.A large rock at Magpie, beside the Yarrowee Creek, was called Pulpit Rock. The bluestone 1857-58 former Wesleyan Church, on the corner of Fitzroy Street and Princes Street St Kilda, was one of the first Wesleyan churches in Victoria designed in the gothic style. It had a square central entrance tower and early English stepped buttresses and pinnacles above. It was later the St Kilda Uniting Church and was closed on 25 June 1978. It has now been covered to flats.According to Heritage Victoria: The old St Kilda Methodist Church is a finely designed 1850's church building and centrepiece of a group of individually significant buildings in an urban conservation area. Towered churches from the 1850s are rare in Melbourne and this building is thus of special significance in this regard as well as for its design and detailing. This building is an important work of architects Crouch & Wilson. Thomas Crouch was prominent in St Kilda Methodist church affairs and lived locally. He served a term as mayor of St Kilda and also designed the chapel at Pentridge and Methodist churches at Fitzroy, Collingwood, Flemington, Daylesford and Maldon. St Kilda was the home of many of the better off Melbournians in the 1850s, '60s and '70s. The original Methodist (Wesleyan) Church was built on the corner of Alexandra Crescent and Windsor Lane in 1888. It was enlarged in 1892. In 1908 this building was removed to Valonia Avenue by horse-drawn dray. The brick church was built in 1915 after which the earlier building became the Sunday School. In 1977 the Methodist Church joined with others to become the Uniting Church. Tarnagulla was famous from the early days for its philharmonic choirs, often under the auspices of the Wesleyan Church and frequently in conjunction with the other churches. This photograph illustrates part of the interior of the Wesleyan Church, and the large choir is performing a classical cantata for the Wesleyan Sunday School celebrations. The older gentleman near the centre of the photograph is Wesleyan Sunday School stalwart and Tarnagulla Town Clerk, HC Bristol. The two memorial plaques on the rear wall are for Tarnagulla pioneers David Hatt (left) and Jonathan Falder. EDHS Newsletter No. 191 March 2010 BOOK LAUNCH Eltham's Serious and Their Neighbours (100 pages, B5, February 2010) This new book by Ken Eckersall follows from his publication of 2000, Eltham Inhabitants, with some stories retold and many new stories. Eltham 's Serious and Their Neighbours tells an Eltham narrative from 1850 to the present. The name 'Eltham's Serious' refers affectionately to Eltham/Wesleyan/Methodist/Uniting Church/Eltham Montmorency Uniting Church. Commemorative trowel from Wesley Church St Kilda, 22 October 1857. Alexander Fraser (1802-1888), businessman and politician. Fraser lived at St Kilda and in 1857 was elected to its first Municipal Council; in 1859 he became chairman and mayor in 1864-65. An active churchman, he held most important offices in the Wesleyan Church and for thirty years was treasurer of the supernumerary fund, which he helped Rev. Daniel Draper to found. Dour and pious, Fraser was conscientious in fulfilling his political duties. He presided at numerous meetings and laid countless foundation stones.Silver trowel with polished wooden handle. Born on 4 July 1918, the son of Queen Sālote Tupou III and her consort Prince Viliami Tungī Mailefihi. He was educated at Newington College and studied Law at Sydney University while resident at Wesley College in Sydney, Australia. He was appointed Minister of Education by Queen Sālote in 1943, Minister of Health in 1944, and in 1949, Premier. He remained a lay preacher of the Free Wesleyan Church until his death, and in some circumstances, was empowered to appoint an acting church president.
