He first attended the school at the age of 17 years and within two years he was a member of the infamous Kelly Gang. During World War I, 22 former pupils volunteered for active service and four gave their lives. The banner depicts the original Unit motto and colour patch - white over red diamond - of the 24th Battalion which was raised in a hurry from a surplus of recruits at Broadmeadows Camp in Victoria. The battalion was formed during the first week of May 1915 ,and sailed from Melbourne at the end of that week. On September 4, 1915 the Battalion went ashore at Gallipoli and spent the next 16 weeks sharing duty in the Lone Pine trenches with the 23rd Battalion. in March 1916 the Battalion proceeded to France. It took part in its first major offensive around Pozieres and Mouquet Farm in July and August 1917. When patrolling no-man's land the men of the 24th adopted a unique form of snow camouflage - large white nighties bought in Amiens. The Battalion left the front line for the last time on 6 October 1918 and disbanded in May 1919. Victoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940 and were deployed to the middle east. After extensive fighting at Tobruk and El Alamein bettween July and November 1942 the Unit adopted a T shaped colour patch. After formation, the 2/24th battalion was moved to Wangaratta, where it remained until its training facilities were ready in Bonegilla prior to overseas deployment to the middle east. Borough of Wangaratta Certificate of Thanks and Apppreciation presented to Private Sydney Spencer Plum. 3431 1st Pioneer Battalion A.I.F, Born January 3rd 1894 at Dockers Plains. Father's name Albert F Plum. Mother's name Mary Plum. He was educated at North Wangaratta and Docker's Plains State School. He was a blacksmith when he enlisted June 12th 1915. He trained at Flemington Racecourse and embarked on SS "Nestor" October 11th 1915. He fought in battles; Peronne, Cambrai, Somme. Being wounded 3 times. He embarked for home per SS "Orontes"; disembarked January 28th 1919 and was discharged March 16th 1919. Later, he entered the service of the Victorian Railways Department.Oak framed certificates were presented by the Borough of Wangaratta to the relatives of soldiers killed in action and returned soldiers who enlisted from the Borough during the First World War. These ceremonies were well attended by the local communities and held at intervals when the soldiers and nurses returned home from active service.Burgandy wooden frame with sand coloured mounting of a certificate of thanks and appreciation from Borough of Wangaratta to Pte Sidney S PLUM. Studio portrait of 5347 Private Cyril Buckler, 14th Battalion. A postman from Wangaratta, Victoria, prior to enlistment on 16 February 1916 he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916 for Egypt. His unit relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. Pte Buckler was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 7 August 1916. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. This photograph of Cyril Buckler in the rank of Sergeant was probably taken while he was serving in the Senior Cadets or the Citizen Forces prior to enlistment in the AIF.Cyril Buckler was a postman in Wangaratta prior to enlisting in the AIF on February 16 1916 at the age of 19 years 11 months. He was killed in action on August 7th 1916 near Pozieres in France aged 20 years. He has no known grave. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1996 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honour. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The 16th Battalion was known as the Queen's Westminster Rifles, an Infantry regiment of the British Army formed in 1908 and disbanded in 1938. The Battalion was engaged on the western front between 1914 and 1918. This is a certificate presented to 2156 Private Christopher Dennis Parkinson who enlisted on 4 April 1916, served in 2nd Pioneer Battalion A.I.F. He was Wounded In Action and died form gunshot wound (abdomen) on 22 December 1917 in Belgium. He is buried in Trois Arbres Military Cemetary, STRENWERCK, 3 and a half miles N.W of Armentieres. Plot 2; Row C; Grave 16. He received the 1914/15 Star; British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Henry William Frisch was born at Warrnambool to H.W. and Sarah Frisch. He iniitally served with the 8th Battallion, was transferred to the 59th Battalion on 26 February 1916, then to the 58th Battalion on 15 May 1916 served with the 59th Battalion during World War One. He had the regimental number 3054. At the time of his enlistment on 8 June 1915 he had worked as a butter box maker at MvcGennan's of Warrmabool. On 26 February 1916 he was at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt. On 17 June 1916 he embarked on the H.T. Translyvania from Alexandria and disembarked at Marseilles on 23 June 1916. On 14 September 1917 he was furloughed to England, rejoining his battalion on 05 October 1917. On 16 October 1917 Henry Frisch was wounded in the field with shrapnel wounds to the back and neck and multiple shrapnel wounds penetrating the abdomen. He died of wounds received on 17 October 1917 aged 23 yeard. He was buried at Lyssenthoek Military Cemetery (Plot 21. Row H. Grave 19A). The ceetery is south west Poperinghe, Begium. "IN MEMORIAM.
