The Australian Natives' Association (ANA), a mutual society was founded in Melbourne, Australia in April 1871 as the Victorian Natives' Association. Ballarat branch (No 4) was founded in 1874, had a building in Camp Street and was one of the most active branches in the colony, playing a key role in Federation. The medallist, K.G. Luke, was a private mint that made 1956 Olympic Games medals for the Numismatic Association of Victoria, as well as a considerable number of other medals and trophies. Wilfred ‘Billy’ Kent Hughes (1895-1970) appearing to question Bedouin men in Egypt. Kent Hughes was a Gallipoli veteran and later in 1917 won a Military Cross and was mentioned in dispatches four times. He served in World War Two, was captured at the fall of Singapore in 1942 and spent time as a Prisoner or War. He later was made a Knight of the Realm, served in the Menzies federal ministry and played a key role in organizing the Melbourne 1956 Olympics. The first section of the Ballarat Post Office was built in 1864, the second (including the tower and offices in Lydiard St) in 1885. The original design had the arched windows on the ground floor (facing Sturt St) forming a colonnade, but these were soon filled in to provide more internal space. Here the Post Office is decorated for the 1956 Olympic Games, when the rowing and canoeing events were held on Lake Wendouree. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. This Venezuelan 1956 Olympic pennant was souvenired by Marlene Austin, nee Trenberth in 1956 when she was working as an official driver for the Melbourne Olympic Games. Marlene, who was living with her parents in Brighton at the time, took leave from her job as a stenographer to work as a driver at the Olympics. She drove officials and dignitaries from a variety of nations (including Thailand, Italy, Cuba and Sweden) to and from events, collecting a number of souvenirs. Marlene's family have lived in Brighton since 1941, when her parents moved into a house at 15 Moffat Street. The house remained in the family for more than 75 years, before it was sold in 2018.White triangular pennant with a blue border. The pennant features the image of the Olympic rings, with the central ring replaced by the image of the Olympic flame burning in a cauldron atop a Grecian pillar. Inside each of the four remaining rings are images of athletes competing in sporting events: a hurdler, a shooter, two boxers and a cyclist.Above the Olympic flame, the word "MELBOURNE" is printed in black. Anne Pedretti was born at Elevated Plains, Victoria, on 15 September 1875, the daughter of Martino Pedretti and Sarah Ind. She married George Gervasoni of Yandoit Creek, and died at Dayesford on 13 August 1957.
