The boy is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries for Atkinson's greengrocery business and general store located at 815 Whitehorse Road. The photo is taken in Whitehorse Road, near the corner of Elgar Road looking towards Zetland Road. No details are known about Albert. The business was owned by Emma and William Atkinson. Emma was born in East Doncaster in 1903, the daughter of Carl Heinrich Uebergang and Sarah Buck. Emma’s grandparents were pioneers in Doncaster from 1855 and her father had an orchard in Andersons Creek Road, which was sold in 1961. She married William James Atkinson in 1930 and the Atkinsons ran the store from c1930 to c1950. (See file for further details). In retirement the couple lived at 63 Zetland Road, Mont Albert and William continued to work as an orchard hand. Emma died in March 2000 and is buried in Templestowe Cemetery. Scouting started in Australia with some informal troops in Western Australia and Victoria in 1907. Scouting was established in Australia in 1908, the year the first Boy Scout training handbook Scouting for Boys was published in England. CHUMS Scout Patrols started forming in Australia in 1908 due to the circulation of CHUMS publication there. R.C. Packer and the Sunday Times in 1908 supported the formation of the League of Boy Scouts. This badge has been produced and sold to raise funds to assist Australian soldiers returning from active service in World War One. At the end of the war the Wannon and Corangamite Territorial Repatriation Scheme was set up to assist returning soldiers to adapt to civilian life. It is presumed that similar schemes were established in other electorates in Australia. Wannon is the name of a Federal electorate in the south west of Victoria and includes Warrnambool and the name on the badge may be an abbreviation of the fuller name mentioned above or an offshoot of the above organization. The scheme included assistance to soldiers with loans to set up businesses and build homes. This badge is retained as an example of a local effort to assist Australian soldiers returning from active service in World War One. This is a metal badge with a blue outer rim and an image on a cream background of a young man in a blue jacket and brown hat. The printing is in red. For many years Legacy was invited to bring junior legatees to Government House for for an enjoyable Legacy Christmas party. There were entertainers, carousels and often a train ride. And the joy of a Christmas present for each child. This photo shows a toddler riding a pony, which is being led by another boy in service uniform. 'Harry' (Richard Henry) Watson was the son of John (Jack) and Edie Watson of Cromie Street Murtoa. This is his Registration Certificate for the Boy Scouts 1st Murtoa Troop. An illustrated rectangular certificate in blue, navy blue and orange colours on a greyish background with a white border. Illustrations of scouting activities are included along with the Motto - Be Prepared - and a picture of Baden Powell. The hand written names of the scout (Harry Watson); the troop (1st Murtoa); and two representatives of the State Executive Committee and the date (1/9/1928) are included with the Scout's Promise. Two photos from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. One photo shows a reunion in 1959 featuring several past residents, their husbands and children. Faces have small numbers indicating their names which were recorded on the back: 1 Margaret Guy, 2 Greg Guy, 3 and 4 are their children. 5 Bab Thompson 6 his wife, 7 their child. 8 Alice Cameron and 9 her husband (Black) and their four children. 10 is Lois Clark (nee Fitzsimmons) and one child. 11 Doreen Ashworth and 12 is her husband (Closter) and their three children. The other photo shows two children of past residents. Names written on the page it was stuck on were 'Boy Guy' and 'Baby John Frost'. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Generally, Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A record of a reunion at Stanhope. Legacy have many programs to send junior legatees on activities, camps and outings. The photos show boys playing games at a table. Appears to be part of the same camp as the girl with the kangaroo (03097) and the kayaking photos (03095 and 03096). The date is not known though it was stored with other photos of Junior Legatees from the 1980s and 1990s. Colour slide of two legatees and a school boy near a large number of toys collected for distribution. One man is Ivan Layton the CEO of Legacy for 30 years. There were wooden rocking horses and planes. Also soft toys such as Humpty Dumpty, teddies and koalas. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. This and No 24 ‘Thulecroft’ were built in 1907/08 by brothers-in-law Harrison Rotherham & William Buchanan. They used a process new to Melbourne at the time – making concrete bricks for which they used sand from Middlesex Road. Harrison Buchanan, son of William, is the small boy in the photo.
