The French Collection was donated to the Society in 2022. This collection includes documents, artworks, books, costumes and artefacts belonging to two families. A number belonged to, or were made by the grandparents of the donor: Vida May Wing and her husband Hubert Charles McDonald. [Other items belonging to Vida and Hubert are in the collections of the Australian Performing Arts Museum and Museum Victoria.] A second significant group of objects were gifts made to the donor's family by Lucy (Jean) Hornby of Queen Street, Kew whose family had been early settlers in the district. Vida May Wing was born in Richmond in 1882. A noted teacher of plain, fancy and step dancing, during the first two decades of the twentieth century she held annual fancy dancing and floral balls, where her pupils were the performers. In 1916, she married Hubert Charles McDonald. She died in 1959.Upright, embossed celluloid, silk iined vanity dresser box which belonged to Vida May McDonald (nee Wing). The sides of the box are covered with purple figured velvet while the lids are covered with embossed celluloid. The case has a number of panels which open to reveal its pink silk lined interior which was once fitted out with mirrors, combs, brushes, and makeup jars. By 1868, no advancement was achieved, and Parkes' labor and efforts were ended. In 1869, Englishman Daniel Stills created a company called Xylonite to experiment and create a product similar to Parkesine. These efforts ended in 1874 when Stills went bankrupt. Celluloid / xylonite was made into toiletry articles, novelties, photographic film, and many other mass-produced goods. Its popularity began to wane only toward the middle of the 20th century, following the introduction of plastics based on entirely synthetic polymers. Dr. Joseph Clover (1825-1882), an English physician, first described his Portable Regulating Ether Inhaler on Jan. 20, 1877. Clover was an especially sought after anesthesiologist and early pioneer in the specialty. This was the best-known of many inhalers that Clover designed. The dome-shaped reservoir was turned to points on a control dial to gradually increase or decrease the percentage of the air that passed over the ether. Several inventors based new inhalers on this, while the original continued to be manufactured as late as the beginning of WWII. Clover, to spare the patient the unpleasantness of induction with his "closed" inhaler (1877), suggested the "mitigated-ether" technique. The inhaler was fitted with a bypass tap for the reception of N2O. The bag was filled with the gas and anaesthesia was inducted a combination of N2O and asphyxiation. Ether was then admitted gradually by rotation of the bowl of the inhaler. When the patient had been duly "weaned over" to ether, the mask was lifted, the N2O allowed to escape, the bag refilled with exhaled air, and normal anaesthesia "a la Clover's inhaler" was continued.Metal domed chamber with a bulb attachment for rebreather bag, including a tap mechanism. Remnants of the paper rebreather bag are attached to the bulb. At the other end is a yellow facemask made of plastic (probably celluloid). Nickel silver first became popular as a base metal for silver-plated cutlery and other silverware, notably the electroplated wares called EPNS (electro-plated nickel silver). Nickel silver is named for its silvery appearance, but ironically it actually contains no elemental silver. Items inscribed with WEARS WHITE meant that the metal stays white even as it wears.Five items of silver plated cutlery. 2133.1 is a small knife, 2133.2 is a fork and 2133.3 is a spoon. These three pieces are children's cutlery. 2133.4 is salt spoon and 2133.5 is a butter knife. All but 2133.1 have metal handles. Winnifred Gardiner Davies, 1875-1973, married Mr Jones.Silver card case and notebook, etched and decorated with fern leaves and an engraved inscription.
