Domestic object - Electric Stove and Hotplate
This early electric stove burner was likely produced in the early to mid-20th century. Used as a single-burner cooking appliance, common in homes before modern stovetops became standard. Functioned by passing an electric current through the coiled resistive wires, generating heat for cooking. The separate metal hot plate would distribute heat evenly, preventing direct contact with open elements.A round electric stove burner with an open metal framework revealing coiled heating elements. The burner consists of a metal base with radial supports, where spring-loaded resistive heating wires are arranged in a circular pattern. A flat metal hot plate is seen separately, which would be placed on top for even heat distribution when cooking. Domestic object - Fuel Stove
This portable stove was likely used in the early to mid-20th century for camping, emergency cooking, or small-scale kitchen use before modern gas and electric stoves became widespread. Such stoves were popular among travellers, soldiers, and rural households, where permanent cooking facilities were not available. The pressurized fuel system suggests it used kerosene, alcohol, or gas to create a controlled flame for cooking. The sturdy cast iron or aluminum frame allowed it to support pots and kettles for boiling, frying, or heating food. This type of stove design was an essential tool for survivalists, campers, and households in areas without electricity. The item is a single-burner portable stove, likely powered by kerosene, gas, or alcohol, commonly used for camping, emergency cooking, or small kitchen setups. It consists of: A circular metal frame with three stabilizing legs, designed to support a pot or pan over the burner. A central burner unit with a small rusted cast iron or brass burner head, which has multiple gas outlets or jet holes for controlled flame distribution. A fuel tank on the left side, likely made of aluminum or tin-plated steel, connected to the burner by a fuel line. The tank appears to be pressurized, meaning it may have used a hand-pump system for fuel delivery. A control valve with a round metal knob on the right, used to regulate the flow of fuel to the burner. The surface is worn and oxidized, showing signs of use and exposure to heat and fuel residues.stove, fuel, gas, household item, cooking -

Functional object - Enamel bowl, Unknown
This small vintage bowl was used for cooking. From the 1860's - 1930's various companies called their enamelware products by their own unique names, e.g. graniteware and agateware. The enamel coating put an end to metallic tasting food and prevented rust from contaminating food. It did scratch and chip easily.A small vintage round yellow enamel bowl with a green rim. Domestic object - Tin Bread Pudding Steam Mould
This type of mould was commonly used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in British and European households, where steamed puddings were a popular dessert. It was widely used before modern ovens with consistent temperature control became commonplace. This is a traditional steamed pudding mould, used to prepare bread pudding, suet pudding, or steamed cakes. The central tube allows for more efficient heat distribution, ensuring even cooking throughout the dense pudding mixture. Typically used in water baths (bain-marie) or steamers, placed in a pot of boiling water for slow and even cooking. This is a vintage metal bread pudding steam mould, consisting of a cylindrical metal container with a fitted lid and an internal central tube to aid in even heat distribution. The key features include: A round metal basin with a slightly tapered shape, designed to hold the pudding mixture. A removable metal lid with a handle for easy lifting. A central tube (chimney-like structure), which helps ensure even cooking by allowing steam or heat to circulate through the center of the pudding. The metal surface shows signs of age, rust, and patina, indicating long-term use.cooking, baking, kitchen, pudding, bread, household item, mould -

In 2005, members of the PMH&PS undertook a study of the residents of the houses in a Port Melbourne street precinct from the 1880s to 1960. The area is bounded by Evans Street, the E side of Bridge Street, S side of Williamstown Road, Farrell Street both the E & W sides plus the section of Ross Street between Farrell and Bridge and the part of Derham Street between Farrell and Bridge. The resulting map and an interactive CD won the Best Community Research, Registers & Records project at the 2007 Victorian Community History Awards. The project was launched on the railway reserve near the corner of Evans & Farrell streets. Photograph, Somers Camp, c1930
A black and white photo of a boy, Roy Gilbert, standing by cooking pots and a campfire at a beach camp. It is labeled Somers Camp so this was a very early camp using tents, before camp buildings were erected. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. This photo was with a group of photos from around the 1930s from the early days of Legacy, including cricket team, football team, and camps at Balnarring/Somers (saved as 01915 to 01934).Legatee Savige's property at Balnarring became very important for Legacy providing outings and camps for junior legatees.Black and white photo of a boy by cooking pots on a campfire.Handwritten 'Roy Gilbert Somers Camp' in blue pen.
